On December 22, 2021, Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Bryant Gladney responded to a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 70 near the 135.4 mile marker. Bryant arrived on scene, in his staff vehicle, and parked to block a westbound lane of traffic to protect the ambulance that was on scene. Shortly after he arrived, a semi-truck impacted the rear of Chief Gladney's vehicle. Fellow first responders on scene quickly extricated Bryant and transported him to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Assistant Chief Bryant Gladney became a member of the Fire District in 1986. He served as a firefighter at Station 1 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1994. In 2011, he was hired by the Fire District to manage the Fire District’s EMT and Paramedic Training Programs while serving as the EMS Education Program Manager. In 2015, he was promoted to Captain. In 2020, Bryant was promoted to Assistant Chief and assumed responsibilities for the Fire District’s Training Bureau. He was a passionate teacher and a dedicated responder. During his time with the Fire District, he impacted hundreds of Fire District members and thousands of EMT and paramedic students across the state. Today is the third anniversary of his death. Today we remember his life and legacy as a firefighter, a paramedic, an instructor, an officer, a mentor, and a friend.
