As a Martial Art, Ho Shin Sul Evolution teaches self-confidence, self-discipline, and self-defense. This system seeks not to overcome an attacker with strength, but to use techniques which turn an attacker's own force against themselves. Ho Shin Sul Evolution not only redirects the attack, but turns it back against the attacker and follows through with offensive techniques which may control the at
tackers’ violence or render them incapable of further aggressive actions. The goal of the practitioner is to be in complete control of the confrontation, defusing the aggression using a controlling technique, without the need for uncontrolled damage as seen in many “hard” styles. Evolution is a complete system that uses joint-locking, Aikido like throws, and finishes like Jiu-jutsu or Judo, and kicks and punches like Hapkido. Kajukenbo, and other styles of karate. Evolution emphasizes practical techniques and stresses the importance of learning how to fall safely. Evolution is a martial system or concept, not a competitive sport, and thus emphasizes the most important aspect of any martial system -- self-defense. The system is at this time evolving to include sport and competition programs. The Evolution system has theoretically been in development over the past Twenty years. The Founder of Ho Shin Sul Evolution, Ernest R. Lavender, began his training in 1979 under the instruction of A.Y. Kim in Central Ohio (See, About the Founder) In the way of Hapkido with a heavy influence on the Ho Shin Sul (self-defense) aspect of the art. In 1984 Mr. Lavender started his training in Kajukenbo Under the instruction of, Grand Master Jerry Henson (see, History of Kajukenbo) and soon discovered that Kajukenbo complimented the techniques of Hapkido perfectly and gave him most of what he was missing to make the practical application of techniques most effective with minimum effort to get maximum effect.
