She walked in looking done...

Long day. Low energy. Didn't say much.

And then her feet hit the mat.

Back got straighter.
Eyes woke up.
She bowed in and got to work.

That's the difference.

Structure and positive routine do a lot for kids...
especially the ones who seem worn out before class even starts.

If your teen shuts down the second they get something wrong...

This is why the mat matters.

She missed the punch count.
No excuse.
No meltdown.
Just a small nod...
Then she locked back in and got it right on the next try.

That’s the difference.

More than just kicks and punches...
it’s learning how to own a mistake without letting it own you.

Some kids shut down the second they get something wrong...

And some have already decided they're just "not good at it."

This is why we do what we do.

She mixed up the punch order.
Gave that little shrug kids do...
Listened.
Tried again.
Nailed it on the very next turn.

More than just kicks and punches.

Even in the very first class, they're learning it's okay to be honest, reset, and keep going.

Beyond excited and happy to see that my longtime friend training and sparring partner will be opening his school this month in New Jersey I wonder how many people believed us when we were kids training under master Amato, when we would say one day we’d have our own dojo’s!

Class was over...
and nobody was in a rush to get off the mat.

Just a small group of kids laughing, talking,
going over who landed what in drills.

This is the part people don't always see.

The bow matters.
The work matters.
But so does this.
