There are pranayama that cool and warm, that energize and calm, that clear away toxins and down regulate your systems. Knowing which to apply when can help you to establish a state of sattva regardless of what is happening around you.

We begin with the practice of intentionally directing our breath using our muscles and focusing our minds. Practicing when we realize we need it becomes accessing the technique that’s right when we need it.

When do we need bhastrika pranayama? When we’re feeling fatigue, lethargic or slow minded. Breathing air in and out like a bellows increases oxygen, pumps the diaphragm and massages the digestive organs. It increases heat in your body and energy.

How does a kite take flight? The lift of the wind beneath it presses it upward. Bhastrika pranayama is the practice of using your diaphragm like a pump for air within you. As you actively contract it upward the air is pressed out of your body. As you relax it air is drawn in.

You can imagine, as you practice this breath that you are elevating a kite just above you. With each out breath it rises and with each in breath it drops down. Breathe with a steady rhythm and it flutters up and down.

Physically, you’ll feel your belly muscles working. Energetically, you might notice feeling more awake.
You might feel warming and a sense of lightness.

To access asana that are more effortful we slow our inhales and exhales to increase focus and balance.

When we want to move quickly we can adjust our breath to be rapid and fast creating power in shorter bursts.

Bhastrika pranayama can build heat physically and energetically so you can explode into action or make quick decisions. It cab speed up your internal systems including digestion. It can give you the power you need to take a leap, make a decision or do what needs to be done in the moment.

You can adjust the quality of your prana through pranayama. If you need a bit more fire, heat and active energy, bhastrika pranayama can help.

This technique rapidly moves air in and out with the effort of engaging your diaphragm. By intentionally pumping this muscle you increase the pace of your breathing. The physical movements warm your body, speed up your breathing and shift the flow of prana.
