The United States just powered its first hydrogen electrolyzer from a nuclear plant — connecting a 50-megawatt electrolyzer at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Station in Minnesota to the plant's existing output, producing green hydrogen around the clock from zero-carbon nuclear electricity and delivering it to industrial customers in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region who have been waiting for commercially viable hydrogen supply for a decade.

The Xcel Energy Prairie Island Nuclear Hydrogen Project, developed under the US Department of Energy's Clean Hydrogen Hub program, installs a 50-megawatt proton exchange membrane electrolyzer at the Prairie Island plant site, drawing electricity directly from the nuclear generator output and producing 1,000 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour — approximately 8,700 tonnes annually — for delivery to regional industrial customers including steel reheating furnaces, ammonia production, and fuel cell bus fleet operations across the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

Nuclear's advantage for hydrogen production is maximum electrolyzer utilisation. Solar-powered electrolyzers operate at 20% to 35% utilisation — limited by daylight hours and weather. Wind-powered electrolyzers achieve 35% to 45% utilisation. Prairie Island's nuclear-powered electrolyzer runs at 90% utilisation year-round — the 10% downtime attributable to planned maintenance — producing hydrogen at a capital cost per kilogram that is 40% to 50% lower than equivalent solar or wind-powered systems at the same production volume.

The commercial hydrogen supply to Twin Cities industry validates the regional hydrogen economy concept that has been theoretical for twenty years. Prairie Island's hydrogen is the first commercial-scale zero-carbon hydrogen supply in the Upper Midwest.

America's oldest nuclear plant is making the newest fuel. Prairie Island chose hydrogen.

The Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Georgia is now the largest nuclear power plant in the United States by generating capacity. With four reactors, it has a combined capacity of about 4.8 GW.

Vogtle Units 1 and 2 began commercial operation in the late 1980s, while Unit 3 entered service in 2023 and Unit 4 in 2024. The two new reactors significantly expanded the plant’s capacity and made Vogtle the largest nuclear facility in the country.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Vogtle’s four reactors together can generate enough electricity to serve more than 1 million homes. Its large capacity and high utilization make it one of the most significant sources of low-carbon electricity in the United States.

Before Vogtle’s expansion, Palo Verde Generating Station in Arizona, with about 3.9 GW of capacity across three reactors, was the largest U.S. nuclear plant. Vogtle surpassed it after Units 3 and 4 came online.

With approximately 4.8 GW of nuclear capacity, Plant Vogtle demonstrates the scale of modern nuclear generation in the U.S. Its four reactors provide a large, steady source of electricity regardless of weather or time of day.

In 2025, nuclear energy provided about 18% of total utility-scale electricity generation in the United States, which translates to roughly 797 billion kilowatthours (based on total utility-scale net generation of about 4,429 billion kWh)
