UPDATE: We met with the contractor, highway department and the town today at the field! Materials are being ordered, deconstruction and construction is set to begin on time. Registration is still on hold because the surface material is being shipped from Arizona. It’s a 4-6 week delivery and then a 4 week curing time once it is put in the new courts. Therefore the start and end date is still TBA. If the material gets shipped sooner rather than later, we will be good to go. For safety purposes, please stay away from the field, contractors and construction site during this time. We will let you know when you can go view the field. Parts of the project will be on going throughout the summer but the main goal currently, is to get you up and playing as soon as possible! The season will be adjusted to play into September to make up for the late start. Please start prepping your teams for a quick registration. Check in with your teammates ASAP and get ready for the season. I’m anticipating registration within the next 2 weeks.

NO NEW UPDATE! We are currently waiting to schedule a site walkthrough at the field with the contractors to go over the entire project before deconstructing and ground breaking. That was supposed to be this week but mostly likely delayed until next. Construction is scheduled to begin the first two weeks in May and as far as I know that is still the plan!
Registration will go forward once all construction materials are on the premises. We cannot run game schedules until we know the start date. Therefore, holding registration without information won’t accomplish anything. Trust us, we wish we had more information. This process has been difficult and very time consuming! Again please, thank your board members because they are dedicating a lot of their free time to this project, getting it done and making it happen for all of you! A bit of appreciation would go a long way!

What you can do for us in the interim is:

GO TO THE TOWN MEETING ON MAY 30th, IF YOU ARE A SOMERSET RESIDENT OR ASK YOUR SOMERSET RESIDENT FRIENDS TO VOTE FOR THE NEXT PHASE OF THIS PROJECT! This phase will include all prefabricated seating, tables, field markers, etc for the courts.

SHARE THIS POST AND MAKE SURE AT LEAST ONE PLAYER FROM EACH TEAM FOLLOWS THE FACEBOOK PAGE OR GROUP! All information is posted here first when information is available!

INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO THE WAITING LIST IF THEY ARE LOOKING TO PLAY BY MESSAGING KELLY AT THE PAGE OR BELOW ANY PINNED POST! I get all notifications and handle all membership.

Once we know everything, you will know! We will be calling the captains and posting all information here. Please be patient we are almost there! If you are a captain, please update your teammates and tell them we are still in holding for at least for another week. If you follow the page, please share the information! I am currently working on a bunch of projects and recovering from an injury. I will get back to you when I can. Please refrain from calls at this time. I post as I know! If you don’t see one, it’s because we have no information.

The building committee has a meeting tomorrow for the approval of the next phase of our renovation project. There will be a delay in registration for the 2026 summer season until the work begins on the court replacements. Estimated time line is last week of April first 2 weeks in May depending on the ground conditions due to the snow storm. The undersurface cannot be muddy. Our intended start date as of right now is still the first week in June as usual barring any unforeseen issue with the build. There will be no formal mailing of registration papers this season!

Once work begins there is a two week building process and 2 weeks of curing to the playing surface. The contractors will tell us we are on schedule or not. Once we know, we will have an in person registration at the VFW for established players to be announced. New interested players will be contacted if spots are available. If you have not already spoken to Kelly and want to be added to the waiting list, please message the page or comment below. If you have already spoken to her, she has you on the list and will contact you as spaces become available.

Captains, please start contacting your teammates to confirm they will be playing and message Kelly with anyone that cannot play this season. Also contact any of your friends that play who may not follow our social media pages. At the registration we will be having a players meeting regarding everything new about the courts and the next phases of the project.

This season we will be asking players to bring themselves lawn chairs. There will be NO seating at the field. All new seating will be purchased in phase 2 if it passes. Again we are going to ask all Somerset residents to get to the town meeting to vote for the proposal and to ask everyone you know who lives in Somerset to support us. once the meeting is held. You deserve a nice place to play! The courts will soon be ADA compliant by the completion of the entire project. Seating and accommodations are currently being work on and requested.

There is A LOT going on behind the scenes! Please thank a board member when you see them! They have been working extremely hard and donating their free time to make this field amazing! A huge shout to Barbara Pitera and Diane Preble for spear heading this committee with me and meeting almost every week to make sure this all goes smoothly. Their dedication and work has been amazing! ❤️

~Kelly

Hey everyone, as most of you know, January and February are usually my moths off from all projects and activities but I wanted to jump on to provide a quick update. The board and building committee has been regularly meeting and prepping for the upcoming build. We are still at a stand still as far as the contracts and next steps until the weather breaks and we receive instructions from Mark.
Phase 2 of the 3 year project has been submitted to the CPA committee and has been approved for consideration and vote at the next town meeting. As of right now, we are still on track for the 2 courts to be demolished, with the proper drainage, aggregates, new surrounds and new blend on the surface mixed to match the elements at our field. Meaning outdoor, open to the elements etc. ADA safety compliant and new cement padding and aprons to be added in the playing area. for an easy walking surface and wheelchair accessible. A LOT of work and research has gone into this project. From blue prints, design, to materials research and more. The committee visited all courts in the surrounding area, spoke with other people who did a build including Fall River’s Recreation Department that oversaw the court project at Ruggles Park. We learned from them what not to do as their huge build is completely in disrepair and needs to be redone after a short period of time. They attempted to recuit us to run theirs as well. Ummm…no thank you! We also learned what was also beneficial for them as well. We did our research and there are a lot of moving parts with a lot of people involved in getting us to where we need to be to have proper long lasting and self sustainable courts.
This year, similar to last year we are going to ask that players bring themselves a chair. New seating including benches, tables (one wheel chair assessable table) and chairs along with other necessary and improvements are part of the phase 2 funding. If approved, the phase 2 project will be completed before the 2027 season. Everything in that phase is prefabricated items that only need to be assembled versus build from scratch with the exception of the walkway to the shed/clubhouse that is being added for safety on that hill. Again, we are going to ask all players that are Somerset residents and that is the majority of you, to get out and vote at the town meeting when it occurs! We did all the work but we need you to support the project. We will continue to remind you!!!!
We are expecting phase 1 of 3 to be completed no later than mid May. Registration papers, as always, will go out in April with a newsletter to all of our captains. Hopefully by the time they are ready to go out, we will have the updated timeline and know if a delay of season will be necessary. We do not have any further information at this time so please refrain from asking what we cannot tell you currently. This is what I know as of today. I (Kelly) will be away from Feb 16-March 11 and working on other projects for the other organizations I volunteer for. You will start to hear from me again by the end of March, once I have the registration papers ready for mailing. This years registration will be in person at the VFW with a date TBA.
Soon you will see an advertisement going out for a maintenance person. If you know an able bodied individual that would like a small side gig for a little extra money during the summer and fall season, please have them reach out to us. It is a stipened position with installment payments. We are also going to look into people needing community service hours to assist whom ever this person may be. Once I speak to the insurance company to see how that plays out in the coverage, I will advertise that as well if this works out with regards to liability. That will be a volunteer role most likely for students 16 and above. The board would like our new maintenance person to be on deck for training on the new surface blend as it is being laid down and cured. ONLY THE MAINTENANCE PERSON IS TO TOUCH THE SURFACE OF THE COURTS!!! HE/SHE OR THEY are the only insured individuals to put any type of grooming equipment and or materials in those courts.
We are looking forward to an epic season on some brand new courts soon. I hope you are too!!!! Our vision is coming to fruition. We are asking for everyone to be patient as the process begins and not to impede the progress in any way. Once completed we will most likely have an unveiling prior to the season beginning if all goes according to the timeline and plan. We will discuss phase 3 and the moving and redication of the James Healey Memorial Courts and plaque at a later date this season. The rededication will occur at the Hillside location with the original plaque being mounted at the new courts upon the completion of all 3 phases. We have other exciting things planned including a court naming contest and the opportunity to help the leagues expenses by purchasing a memorial plaque for the new benches being installed next season. No more upper and lower court. It’s time they have proper names. And it’s time to recognize players who made an impact on the league by giving them an honor bench if you are willing to contribute by purchasing one once we have the information and pricing. Talk to you all soon!!!!

A count must be in by that date to order the food. The league will be providing the main course and as always we are looking for volunteers to bring appetizers and desserts. We will be watching the football games and please bring cards or other types of games you may want to enjoy with the group!

Does anyone recognize this phone & glasses? It was left at the field tonight. We couldn’t not unlock it to see who it belongs to. If it is yours, it is locked in the shed in the Presidents/Treasurer’s mailbox on the door. You may open the shed and get it out of the box with your key if you are captain at anytime or if you are a player you can pick it up at the field from a board member any night of game play this week.

One of the picnic table benches collapsed tonight. These tables have been repaired multiple times and for everyone’s safety we are asking everyone NOT to use them. It is in the plans to put all new seating once the courts are replaced and the cement padding is added. Please bring yourself a portable lawn chair and refrain from sitting on those tables while we are in the process of getting them removed!

One of our captains asked to have the measurement Rule #5 posted because it was discovered that balls are not being measured properly! Please read below and refresh your measuring skills!

Rule Five:
A point can be measured at any time. All measurements should be made from the BOTTOM (base) OF THE BOCCE BALL TO THE TOP CENTER OF THE PALLINO. (Balls should be held during measurement). Only the CAPTAINS or designated appointee are allowed on the court during measurements. No players from the playing side of the court can pass the center court line, EXCEPT THE CAPTAINS or designated appointee. One member from each team can be designated by the CAPTAIN if necessary, due to disability or impairment, to measure balls in their place. This appointee will measure ALL balls during the game and must remain the same team player throughout the game. All players are to be out of the court while measurements are being made.

I don’t know what is going on with the sub stuff but: AT NO TIME IS THERE TO BE A NON-REGISTERED PLAYER SUBBING, PLAYING OR IN THE COURTS FOR ANY REASON AT ANY TIME! They are not covered under our insurance rider for the last time. Only registered players are. You all know the rules! Please see Rules of Game Play! Also be respectful to all board members, AGAIN, we are all volunteers and WILL ENFORCE THE LEAGUES RULES AT ALL TIMES! I INSIST ON THAT! Whether it is addressed immediately or later it WILL be addressed! Please don’t forget we are also playing and trying to enjoy ourselves as well! We may not see an issue until later! When it comes to my attention, I will address it furthermore and will take action on it! So let this be a warning, WE WILL NOT TOLERATE RUDE, ENTITLED BEHAVIOR FROM ANYONE!
