The Saints picked up a strong 5-3 win over All Saints Academy on Monday evening

The Saints got things started early when Sam Miear (St. James) hit a home run in the first inning, bringing in two runs and giving the Saints an early lead.

After All Saints tied the game in the second, the Saints answered right back. Jay Tribout (St. Teresa) drew a walk to give the Saints a 3-2 lead, and the team added two more runs in the third inning thanks to RBI walks by Wavey Lester(St. James) and Tyler Trankle (St. James).

Tyler Trankle earned the win on the mound, allowing three hits and three runs over four innings while striking out four. Sam Miear collected the save, and Wavey Lester came in and threw one scoreless inning in relief.

At the plate, Miear led the middle of the lineup with two RBIs. Miear, Trankle, and Ryan Roustio (St. John) each collected a hit for the Saints. The team also showed great patience at the plate, drawing eight walks. Connor Walster (St. James) and Henry Sondag (St. Teresa) each led the way with two walks.

Trankle also made things happen on the bases, stealing three bags, and the Saints defense turned a double play to help close out the win.

Great team win for the Saints! Next up, HCS/St. Libory tomorrow night at 7pm at Millstadt Township Park.

The Saints Baseball team is off to a hot start once again, finishing a perfect first week of the 2026 fall season with a 5-0 record and a Battle at the Burg Championship!

The Saints opened the season Monday night with a dominant 8-0 win over ICS. 8th grader Sam Miear of St. James Athletics threw 5 innings, faced just one batter over the minimum, and struck out all 15 batters he retired. The Saints won the shortened 6-inning game behind a combined no-hitter from Miear and Jay Tribout of St. Teresa Catholic School . The duo recorded 17 of the 18 outs by strikeout.

On Thursday evening, the Saints began the Battle at the Burg Tournament, hosted by Zion Lutheran at the Freeburg SISBL fields. The Saints defeated Wirth Jr. High of Cahokia 13-0 in another shortened game, with Saints pitchers allowing only 1 hit over 3 innings. Jay Tribout threw 1 inning, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2. Ryan Roustio threw 1 inning, striking out 3 and walking 1. Michael Lueckenhoff finished the final inning, striking out 1 and walking 2.

At the plate, Roustio, Wavey Lester of St. James, and Tyler Trankle of St. James all had big games, combining for 3 hits and 6 RBIs. Lester had the biggest swing of the night, launching a 3-run home run.

Friday night was more of the same against Pontiac Jr. High of Fairview Heights, as the Saints won 15-6. The Saints collected 13 hits, with all 9 starters recording at least 1 hit. Sam Miear led the way, going 2-for-3 with 2 monster triples. Lester, Tribout, Silas Schroeder of St. Teresa, Henry Sondag of St. Teresa, and Roustio all collected multiple hits or RBIs.

Saturday started with two heavy hitters squaring off in the semifinals, as the Saints matched up against Holy Childhood/St. Libory. HCS/St. Libory brought a powerful lineup and hard-throwing pitchers, but outside of the 1st inning, they could not get much going against Saints ace Sam Miear.

Miear delivered another powerful pitching performance, striking out 13 batters over 6 innings. Tribout came on in the 7th inning to pick up the save, adding 2 more strikeouts.

Hits were tough to come by for both teams, but the Saints collected 5 hits. Tribout, Trankle, and Lester all added doubles. St. John’s Rook Yarber also came through late in the game with a hard-hit pinch-hit single, helping the Saints roll past HCS/St. Libory with a 5-2 victory.

Finally, the Saints faced a familiar opponent in the championship game, the St. Clare Knights of O’Fallon. The Saints took control early, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. Even with limited pitching availability, the Saints had enough left in the tank to fight off a late comeback from the Knights and win the 3rd Annual Battle at the Burg Championship, 11-8.

Miear and Lester once again led the Saints at the plate, combining for 4 RBIs, with Miear adding 2 more hits. Tribout, Roustio, and Yarber all scored runs and combined for 7 walks. Tribout recorded the win, pitching 3 innings with 3 strikeouts. Roustio came on in the 5th inning to earn the save.

It was a total team championship weekend and a great start to the 2026 fall season.

The Saints do not get much rest, as they are back at it this week with a rematch of last year’s 3rd place state game against St. Boniface/St. Mary of Edwardsville. Then on Tuesday, they look to get revenge against St. John Lutheran Red Bud, a team that has been a thorn in their side the last couple of seasons.

Congrats, Saints, on an awesome first week. Keep it rolling!

The 2026 Mike Jones Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by Real Estate Group, final sponsor is our Memorial Hole Sponsor: In Loving Memory of Mike Jones, Forever in Our Hearts.

This tournament continues to honor the life and legacy of Mike Jones, our former Athletic Director, mentor, coach, and friend. Mike dedicated nearly a decade of his life to St. John Athletics before courageously battling liver cancer and passing away in 2016. His passion for students, athletics, and community continues to leave a lasting impact on our school today.

A special thank you to Mike’s family: Debbie, John, Chris, Kendall, Cade, Nick, Tori, James, Theodore, and Maddie, for their continued support of St. John Athletics and the Mike Jones Memorial Golf Tournament.

I am proud to organize this tournament each year in remembrance of Mike. His name, his impact, and his love for St. John Athletics continue to bring our community together and help drive the success of our athletic programs.

Thank you to the Jones family for helping keep Mike’s legacy alive and for continuing to support the students, athletes, and families of St. John.

Cheers to you, Mike. Forever in our hearts.
