An End of an Era

With the February bond vote passing with a significant majority, the city of Sioux Center and the Sioux Center Community School district will be utilizing the land on which the half-mile Sioux Speedway resides to construct a new high school. It is bittersweet, as we do see the benefit of a new educational facility for the future of the Sioux Center community and wish all the best as it will provide a great venue to educate the next generation. With dirt work scheduled for this Spring, there will be no racing events in 2019 and beyond. This means the 2018 Sioux County Youth Fair event was indeed the last at the track holding origins back to 1972. Sioux Falls racer Gregg Bakker was the last victor. With this comes the announcement that the Sioux Speedway website (siouxspeedway.net or siouxspeedway.com) will cease operation April 1, while this Sioux Speedway page will continue for the sake of history. We must thank those that have made auto racing possible in Sioux Center for parts of a nearly 50 year span. This includes the former Sioux Center Jaycees who worked to build the first figure-8 and oval configurations of the speedway in the 1970s, and the Sioux County Fair Board for promoting racing over the last decade-and-a-half, while welcoming high-horsepower action back to the facility in 1998. Thanks to the fair board members and their families putting in several hours of their time to get ready for events, serving food, selling tickets, and handling more things than can be listed. Thank you to Leon Mulder, for bringing racing back to Sioux Speedway in 1998. Leon got his start racing cars on the original Sioux Speedway circuit as a driver himself and put in an extensive amount of work to get the track in racing shape and get drivers interested in coming to Sioux Center to race a few times every Summer. No one who was a part of the capacity crowd on Tuesday, July 21, 1998 will forget that first event back at the track. After Leon stepped away from promoting a few years later, the fair board hired Denny Moore and Harlan Van Otterloo to handle events in the mid-2000s. Thanks to them for continuing the tradition. Darlo and Laura Mulder took over in 2008 and have worked tirelessly year-in and year-out to put on the racing events while bringing in a variety of racing series including winged Sprint Cars and Super Late Models. Their passion for the sport and supporting their home community has provided us all with an opportunity to be a part of the half-mile tradition. Thank you, Darlo & Laura. Thanks to all of the officials and workers who have helped at the speedway, thanks to those that have lent equipment and their own time to prepare the race track and the grounds. Thanks to all the racers near and far that took time to compete at Sioux Speedway. Thanks to all the fans, family members, and fair-goers who have come out to cheer on the racers. Thanks again to the Sioux County Youth Fair board. We wish the best for the future to the Sioux County Youth Fair and to all the dedicated 4H members.

On behalf of Sioux Speedway, thank you.

If you have any photos or stories from any past events at the track, please feel free to post them here.

Bakker Wins His Second Sprint Car Showdown
Zebell and Overgaard Fendered Feature Winners

SIOUX CENTER, IOWA Initially the weatherman had some worried that rain would dampen the running of the 9th Annual Mouw Motor Company Sprint Car Showdown. Thankfully the dire forecasts evolved into a hot and humid evening and the Sioux County Youth Fair was able to roar to life once more. The T&R Contracting Late Model Street Stock Touring Series took to the track first for their feature event. The always quick Cory Yeigh from Sioux Falls looked like the man to beat early as he took his #64 machine from the second row and built a commanding lead. It was not to be as an incident in turn two and contact with the guardrail ended his night behind a wrecker. That gave an opportunity to the rest of the field and JJ Zebell from Parker, SD drove from his last place starting position to pick up the win. Behind the of Zebell was Jim Pruett from Brandon, SD in car #97 in second. Past Sioux Speedway feature winner Travis Schreurs came home third in car #1 with Hobby Stock racer Dustin Gulbrandson finishing fourth in his cousin Cory Yeigh’s back up car, #54. Rounding out the top five was Brylee Gough from Crooks, SD in .

The Stock Car division took to the track next. Twenty years ago, 1998, marked the return of Stock Car racing events to Sioux Speedway as we now know it. During the 1998 Sioux County Youth Fair, Chad Overgaard won the Enduro race and Darrin Korthals was the inagural winner in the Street Stock division. As maybe something of a bookend, both of these racers saw action in the 2018 Sioux County Youth Fair Stock Car feature. Overgaard had the fortune of drawing a front row starting spot. The driver from Luverne, MN was able to take advantage and jump out to the early lead. As the race went on, the battle for second was an old fashioned slugfest with Randy Brands, Stefan Sybesma, and Darrin Korthals in on the action. Korthals made his way up to second, but as soon as that happened he pulled off with mechanical issues. Brands then went on a mission and caught Overgaard’s #42 car. With just a couple of laps to go, it looked as if Brands may have had the muscle to challenge Overgaard, but it looked as if a rough spot in the track off of turn two hindered his progress. Overgaard was the victor, his third in the Street Stock/Stock Car division, but the first one since he doubled up during the Sioux County Youth fair in 2000. Brands from Boyden, IA came home second in #27. Stefan Sybesma from Sanborn was third in , Orange City ‘s Mel Elsberry was fourth in his car followed by fellow Orange Cityian Brad TeGrotenhuis #268.

As the Property Solutions of America Midwest Sprint Touring Series took to the track it was evident that storms were finally moving into the area from the Northwest. The weather, however, never became a factor by the time the checkerd flag flew. Drivers from South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Oklahoma, North Dakota, and California were in attendance to battle for the 9th Annual Mouw Motor Company Sprint Car Showdown trophy. Gregg Bakker had won the 2nd Annual event in 2011 and found himself on the front row for the 2018 edition. The blue and white car held strong at the front of the field. With two laps to go Oklahoma City, OK’s Wayne Johnson made his way to Bakker’s tail tank and looked to be waiting for the right moment to make his move around Bakker. That attempt was short lived; however, as a caution waved for a stalled car in turn four. On the restart Bakker, hailing from Sioux Falls, took off like a rocket and picked up his second Sprint Car showdown trophy. Johnson was second in his car. Eric Lutz, also of Sioux Falls was third in the Scadden #6 car with Harwood, ND’s Lee Grosz, , in fourth. Finishing up fifth in car was Springville, CA’s Mason Daniels.

Pospisil Tops Tri-State Late Models
Hovden & Zevenbergen Iron Man Victors

SIOUX CENTER, IOWA A beautiful May 31 evening in Sioux Center, Iowa was the stage for the Ver Hoef Automotive Summer Celebration Spectacular at the half-mile Sioux Speedway. First to hit the track for their main event were the USRA Iron Man B-Modifieds presented by Sybesma Graphics. Dave Kennedy and past Sioux Speedway Modified Champion John Klynsma paced the field to the green, but it did not take long for USRA hotshoe Dan Hovden to make his way to the front. The Decorah, Iowa racer piloted his #16 machine to the lead for the better part of the event and took home his first Sioux Speedway win. Brandon, South Dakota’s Dustin Kruse also moved from the third row to finish in the runner up spot in car #6. John Klynsma from nearby Hospers, IA was third in the OK1Stop machine. Cody Olsen traveled from Omaha, NE to take the fourth spot in his triple-7 car and Carl Brewer from Vermillion, SD was fifth in .

The Tri-State Late Models were the second feature to take to the Speedway Thursday night with twenty super late models on hand for the first time ever at Sioux Speedway. 2017 SLMR Champion Tad Pospisil took off from the pole position and cruised to victory in his #04 car. As smooth as Pospisil was, no one was going to catch him. Former Sioux Speedway Late Model Street Stock winner, Gary Brown, Jr. put up a valiant effort and finished second in the #22 car. Quinten Meyers moved up from sixth to claim the third spot in his car out of Pukwana, South Dakota. Rock Rapids’ “Rowdy” Nate Beyenhof was fourth in his #51 machine and youngster Blair Nothdurft came home fifth in his rookie season in the Late Model division.

The finale of the evening saw twenty-two USRA Iron Man Stock Cars hit the track for twenty laps of door-to-door action. This season Elijah Zevenbergen has had his share of bad luck, but placing in the top eight in passing points after the heat races allowed him to draw the front row for the main event. That turned out to be good news for him and bad news for the competition as the Ocheyedan, Iowa racer put the out front and never looked back taking his seventh career victory at Sioux Speedway. Decorah, Iowa’s Kyle Falk moved his #67 car from the eighth starting spot up to second at the checkered with the #42 of Chad Overgaard from Luverne, Minnesota finishing up in third. Another pair of long haul drivers from Decorah and Calmar, Iowa respectively finished fourth and fifth with Dillon Anderson #44 beating out Lynn Panos #97.

Thanks to all that came out to Sioux Speedway for the Summer Celebration event. Results can be found at www.siouxspeedway.com. We hope to see you again on July 12 for the 9th Annual Mouw Motor Company Sprint Car Showdown featuring MSTS 360 Sprint Cars, the Late Model Street Stock Touring Series, and Stock Cars.
