We're doing for a raffle! Enter to win two bundles of outdoor gear.

The Cozy Camper bundle includes a Campwell quilted camp wrap poncho and foldable camp chair. The wrap has a hood and snaps in the front to keep you warm while hanging outside. Wheelchair tested and approved! The chair has two pockets, a 300lb weight capacity and slightly oversized seat (30x20 ish).

The Easy Hiker bundle includes an REI Walker staff with a cane-type handle and a 10L day pack with a water bladder. The staff is great for people who need extra balance support but find typical hiking poles uncomfortable. It extends to 39 inches. The pack is big enough to carry essentials on a short outing without having to haul a water bottle. It fits up to size XL comfortably.

Tickets are just 5! Raffle ends on November 30 or after we sell a minimum 100 tickets. Thanks REI Co-op for the gear!

CN: su!c!de and g*n v!olence

In the past week, RJ Mitte a 34 year old actor with cerebral palsy who began acting as a teen, died by su!c!de. And there was another school sh00ting, in Bend Oregon. This time an accessible education classroom was targeted. Multiple children and teachers were injured, 5 were k!lled including the shooter who also attended the education program at the school.

All of them were victims, including the school shooter.

This is not just an individual problem, it is a cultural, structural, and systemic one. We will never know the full motivations of RJ Mitte or the school shooter - and to be clear I AM NOT EQUATING the two! - but a culture in which acts of violence are a more approachable choice than acts of care is a problem.

All of them deserved more. Disabled kids deserve to grow up into disabled adults, with full care and support and access to resources.

We must do better.

Every day is Indigenous Peoples' Day! But today especially, it is important to celebrate the cultures, resilience, and ongoing presence of Indigenous peoples in the so-called United States, while recognizing and working to undo the harms caused by colonization.

A few things non-Natives can do today and every day:

- Learn about the Indigenous people of the land you live on. You can start at the Native Land website, but do not stop there. Look for tribal websites and social media accounts to learn more.

- Attend a celebration, pow wow, or other cultural event, online or in person. Many events and cultural celebrations are open to the public. There are also numerous presentations, poetry readings, art exhibits, musuems, and more.

- Read or listen to Indigenous authors. There are so many books out there, fiction and nonfiction, to learn about Native history and culture.

- Spend time with the land in a respectful way. Land is relationship. Start practicing a less extractive, entitled approach to the land; this mindset stems from colonization.

Disabled Hikers will always ally with Native peoples, land back efforts, and respectful recreation. Our fights are intertwined!

We are turning off the shop in two weeks, so its your last chance to get signed copies of The Disabled Hiker's Guides, Jimothy t-shirts, stickers, and prints, and other Disabled Hikers swag and guarantee it arrives before the holidays. Syren (who also fills all the orders) will be traveling for DH work, so the shop will be closed until December. Get your stuff where the clicks are found!

The destruction of nature, of sacred sites, of ancestral homelands to build walls and reinforce borders in the US and around the world can not continue.

And "public land" advocates should be as angry about it as they are about issues that affect where they can recreate.

Borders are nothing but lines on a map created and maintained by violence. While habitat ranges and human territories have always existed, and yes sometimes fought over, the militarization of those sites is new in human history. The institutional cruelty is new. Which also means it can end.

The photo is of a leaf from a cottonwood tree, golden in fall color. An ancient cottonwood grove in Tohona O'odham land at the Arizona/Mexico border was recently torn down for the border wall. Text on the leaf reads nature knows no borders.

Thank you for so much interest! We currently have over 20 applicants, so turning off the form for now.

We are seeking another volunteer to help us create accessible trail guides! You will review transcripts of audio recorded assessments, make minor edits, and setup the initial formatting.

If you have approximately 1-2 hours per week, can generally commit to a one week turn around (spoon crashes happen!), and want to learn more about our trail assessment process and guides, this could be a great opportunity! And you'll help make more accessible trail guides available.

More details and application where the clicks are found!

Our policy of keeping people safe applies to the people within our organization too.

Lately we've experienced more individuals who feel it is appropriate to engage in personal attacks, name-calling, and making judgments and assumptions. To be clear, we welcome questions and feedback. What we do not accept is people verbally abusing others, calling them names, or passing judgment without asking questions.

We have so many wonderful people in our community and I am so grateful for the support and care we receive. But there are always a handful of folks who, for whatever reason, feel it is appropriate to lash out on others in emails and messages.

It may be a sign of the times, as everyone is feeling the stress. It may be an inevitable part as we grow.

But we are still a very small organization of all Sick, Disabled, and Neurodivergent folks. We do not have the capacity to respond to everything. So moving forward all communications like this will be immediately blocked.

Again, questions and feedback are welcome. But please approach us as real human beings on the other side of the email. Be curious, not judgemental.

We are not disposable.

Stop Talking About Access while Excluding Disabled People.

This is something we have pushed back against for nearly 9 years, but lately it seems to be happening even more frequently: campaigns about access to the outdoors that don't include disability access; conversations about accessibility that don't include Disabled people; funding opportunities aimed at increasing access that never go to disability organizations; speaking engagements that exclude Disabled expertise, and on and on.

During a time when Disabled people are being fully targeted and our rights are undermined, excluding us from so called justice and access work is unacceptable. It is 2026. We should not still be having this conversation.

If you see examples of this, please point it out and ask where the disability representation is.

Syren is in Mendocino, CA working with Mendocino Land Trust on a trail accessibility assessment project. The Land Trust offers a beach walker and a beach wheelchair to borrow at no charge and use on any of the area beaches!

Its not the old, rigid style either. The walker can be independently height adjusted at 6 points - all 4 wheels and handles - and the two front wheels swivel independently. It has hand breaks and a seat. It rolls great over firm or shallow sand, it gets a little bogged down in deep sand but definitely easier than trudging through unassisted. It is a bit heavy and bulky so you may need assistance loading it. The Land Trust will deliver it to you though!

The wheelchair is a push style so I couldn't try it, but it does recline slightly and have swing out armrests for transfer.

We love to see Land Trusts engaging with access work. Have you tried using a beach walker or wheelchair?

ID: 1) a short video in first person perspective of Syren pushing the walker on sand. 2) the walker on the beach. It is red and has balloon tires. Blue ocean waters and cliffs in the background. 3) a selfie photo of Syren's hands on the walker with their dog Benji just beside. 4) a selfie of Syren sitting on the walker seat.

Thank you to everyone who made it out for our hike in the East Bay! We had about 25 people enjoying the redwoods, the fresh air, and the company of other disabled folks in the outdoors. We'll have more events in the area in the spring, and hope you can join us.

Thanks to East Bay Regional Parks and the ranger team at Reinhardt Redwoods for your help with the event!

ID: 1) a photo of about 15 people in front of a stand of redwoods. A couple people are seated in a wheelchair, a couple are using walkers, others are standing or kneeling. All are wearing a mask. 2) a photo of about 15 people with a parking lot behind them, also seated in wheelchair, using a walker, standing or kneeling and wearing masks.
