🐢 Next Module: Turtle & Back | 2 Weeks

Turtle and back control are closely connected, and understanding how one leads to the other is key to both attacking and defending.

Over the next two weeks, we’ll focus on recognizing transitions, knowing when to attack, control, or escape, and making better decisions in these positions.

Join us as we explore the back and turtle positions!

The top player's primary goal when in someone's closed guard is to get out of the legs. Opening the legs is a requirement to getting out, and standing up is the most effective way to opening the legs.

However, if you don't build a strong posture first, you'll find it very difficult to stand up. In the Foundations program, we cover opening the guard in a few key steps:

- keep your hands off the ground, to avoid making the position worse
- get your posture, with your head to the ceiling
- get to your feet
- open the guard

In this short video, coach Eddie Chou talks about how shrugging the legs off the shoulders help make it much easier to build that posture.

For the next two weeks, we’re getting deep into one of the most versatile positions in jiu-jitsu: half-guard, and its variants.

From the bottom, we’ll work on entries, sweeps, and attacks. From the top, we’ll focus on control, passing, and submissions.

And we’ll connect it all through RDLR, butterfly half, deep half, waiter, and transitions between positions.

As always, we won’t just learn techniques. We’ll explore the positions, test them with focused constraints, build resistance, and put everything together in live rounds.

See you on the mats!

Taking care of yourself and your partner is a responsibility we enforce for everyone that steps on to our mats. Just because something is allowed at a competition doesn't make it acceptable to do in the training room. When you slap-bump, you're implicitly accepting that your partner is loaning you their body to train jiu-jitsu, and you must respect that, as they will do the same.

Totally unprompted but commendable: kanipastrami and Sai completed a Super Grand Slam this week, completing all 4 adult classes and helped out at the kids' class in one day.

Here's a sneak peek of what they went through throughout the day!

Coach Pat Guilherme Serafini Cooper showing an Andrew Tackett-inspired pass from the first CJI that he's used to great effect over the past couple years. Keeping up with the jiu-jitsu meta is a great way to get inspired and learn what the best are doing.
