Martial arts can feel intimidating when you’re brand new. Most people walk in unsure of what to expect, wondering if they’ll fit in or be able to keep up.

That’s why classes at Oom Yung Doe–Burlington are taught with patience, encouragement, and the understanding that everyone starts somewhere.

Students learn forms, movement, coordination, and discipline at their own pace in an environment that’s structured, supportive, and welcoming to beginners.

One of the things you notice pretty quickly in martial arts training is that the basics never really go away.

D**g B**g is one of the first weapons students learn, but even advanced students continue coming back to drills like this over and over again. Not because they have to - but because there’s always something to refine.

This reel shows Instructor Karina and Instructor Jayden running through the drill at full speed first, then slowing it down to work through the details together.

Sang Kom, or “Twin Chinese Broad Sword,” is a Ship Pal G*e form that moves beautifully across the floor from beginning to end.

Fluid, controlled, and continuous, the form challenges students to stay connected to each movement while maintaining rhythm and awareness throughout the sequence.

This reel features Instructor Jayden performing portions of the form from several different angles.

This is something we talk about often... especially for women. Awareness matters. So does knowing how to use what you already have with you.

Keys. Your phone. Everyday items.

This training focuses on positioning, staying aware of your surroundings, and using simple tools to help create space and move safely. 🫶🏼💥

Open hand sparring is used to build timing, positioning, and control in motion.

This is productive practice for martial arts practitioners regardless of experience level. Students learn how to stay aware, adjust quickly, and move with intention.

What you might not know is that when you watch a martial arts form, each choreographed sequence of the form is a self-defense technique against a would-be attacker. The opening sequence of the Ocean form is a defense against a double punch attack.

Watch the technique from different angles, and then see it again as part of the full form.

Tang Nang (Kung fu) is often associated with specialized training in balance and flowing energy in martial arts systems like Oom Yung Doe.

This Ocean Form is one way students practice timing, coordination, and how to transition smoothly between movements.

Chung Yung Doe - a traditional weapon form practiced within Oom Yung Doe.

This weapon combines the length of a staff with the precision of a blade, requiring full-body coordination and control.

Training with weapons like this challenges balance, focus, and awareness at a higher level. Every movement has to be intentional, controlled, and connected from start to finish.
