Alabama Senate passed SB71, limiting state environmental rules to federal standards despite Democratic warnings about reduced protections for certain communities

In case you’re not following the current legislative session in Alabama…HB 414 is being proposed, which would remove criminal penalties from subjects transporting live feral swine throughout our state.

Feral swine are responsible for over $50 MILLION in reported damages each year, just in Alabama. The transportation of live feral swine is what led to the mess we are currently faced with. Feral hogs destroy agricultural crops, valuable timber stands, and displace native wildlife. As someone who has fought the seemingly endless fight against this ecological disaster for years, I cannot fathom the thought process that would support removing the restrictions surrounding the transport of live feral hogs.

If you are a land owner, land manager, or anybody who cares in the slightest about the state of our natural resources, this should concern you, no matter your party affiliation. This bill will go in front of the House Judiciary Committee on February 18.
