Leave what you find as you find it! This tree is not smiling on the inside. Carvings can open up a tree to insects and disease. This simple act can ultimately kill the tree. I came across this while hiking up to Williams Lake in Taos, New Mexico. Why must we carve?

Principle 7 of Leave No Trace: Be Considerate of Others and Principle 3: Dispose of Waste Properly apply in this photo. Even though it’s “organic” waste it still is waste. I know I don’t want to arrive at a majestic view to orange peels, pistachio nut casings or a banana peel. Pack it out in a zip loc bag and dispose of at home. If you are from the group “It’s biodegradable, then bury it to get that process started. Others who arrive at a view should feel like no one else has been there. Show some love to the next! 💚💚

Principle 5 of Leave No Trace: Minimize campfire impacts. When backpacking in the outdoors we all love a campfire. Remember to only use dinky, dead and down wood to build your campfire. It takes some effort to gather firewood and it’s part of camp chores. Please never cut trees to burn as someone did so recently in this picture at Rider Hollow. Think about 50 campers staying here over the course of one year. If each group cut 4 small trees to burn that equals to 200 cut at one campsite. Let nature stay wild.
