Narcissists can wreak havoc on their victims' lives, employing a range of manipulative and abusive tactics. They often use charm and charisma to initially lure their targets, making them feel special and valued. However, this honeymoon phase is short-lived. Once the narcissist feels secure in their control, they begin to employ more insidious methods to dominate and undermine their victim.

Gaslighting is one of their favorite tools. By distorting reality, they make their victims question their own perceptions and sanity. For example, a narcissist might deny having said something hurtful, even if there is clear evidence. Over time, this constant denial and manipulation erode the victim's confidence in their own memory and judgment. This mental and emotional abuse leaves the victim feeling isolated and dependent on the narcissist for their sense of reality.

Narcissists also employ a tactic known as triangulation, where they create divisions and rivalries between their victims and others. They might pit friends against each other or create jealousy by flaunting new relationships. This not only feeds the narcissist’s need for attention and control but also further isolates their victim from potential sources of support. The result is a cycle of abuse where the victim feels increasingly trapped and powerless.

In the workplace, narcissists might undermine colleagues by taking credit for their work or spreading rumors to damage their reputation. They are skilled at presenting a polished, competent image to superiors while subtly sabotaging those around them. This can leave victims feeling frustrated and demoralized, often doubting their own abilities and questioning why they are struggling while the narcissist appears to thrive.

Ultimately, the goal of a narcissist is to maintain power and control over their victims.

Future faking is when someone dangles a shiny, specific promise of “what’s next” to keep you emotionally invested, without any real intention of delivering. In narcissistic dynamics, it’s less about hope and more about control.

The grandiosity is the sales pitch: they act like they’re destined for greatness, destined for you, destined for a perfect timeline. Meanwhile, the “future” becomes a leash. You’re not dating a person so much as subscribing to their narrative, and every time you ask for proof, they pivot to the next chapter.

The hook works because it hijacks your brain’s pattern-matching. You start scanning for signs that the promised future is imminent, which makes you overlook the present. Narcissists often use vague timelines (“soon,” “after this one thing”) or escalating specificity (“by next week,” “right after the trip”) to create a sense of momentum.

When you call out inconsistencies, they don’t correct course they reframe. You’re told you’re misunderstanding, that they’re “working on it,” or that you’re lucky to be included in their grand plan. It’s emotional bait with a built-in escape hatch: no matter what happens, they can claim the delay is your fault, their burden, or the universe’s timing.

My take: future faking is one of the most effective ways to keep a victim stuck without needing overt threats. It feels like romance, but it functions like manipulation because it turns accountability into anticipation.

If you’re dealing with this, watch what they do when there’s no audience and no promise to sell: do they build trust through consistent behavior, or do they only intensify the pitch when you pull away?

Grandiosity can be charming for a minute; grandiosity plus a constant “just wait” is a strategy.

The future they’re offering isn’t a destination, it’s a holding pattern.

If they don’t take accountability for their impact, you can choose to stop giving them access.

The Mask Slips When It Stops Working

They're brilliant at the performance, until you're no longer useful.

Narcissists operate on a transactional economy: your value, how well you reflect theirs back at them.

As long as you're fooled, you're safe. You get charm, attention, the illusion of being "special."

But the moment you see them clearly? The moment you stop being their mirror and start being their mirror-breaker?

That's when the supply dries up.

And narcissists can't tolerate irrelevance. They can't tolerate being known.

So they pivot. The person who was their world becomes their villain.

The empathy you thought you witnessed? It was never there. It was performance.

And now that you've taken a bow, you're cast as the antagonist in their narrative.
The cruelty you receive isn't random.

It's targeted. It's personal.

Because you were close enough to see the machinery, and that's an unforgivable sin.

"Some people call it cynicism. I call it not being fooled twice"

Burned. Betrayed. Disappointed more times than I can count. And yet here I am , clearer, harder to fool, and unbothered in a way that used to take me years to find.

Growth isn't always pretty. Sometimes it looks like this. 🖤
