I have received so many messages regarding Mateo’s success.
Many people apologized. lol.
Because I had said for years that I felt Mateo was a scholarship athlete. Many people doubted me, saying that I was just biased as his coach. I told people I knew in the 8th grade (phenom picture included) that Mateo had that intangible “it” factor. I have seen it many times before in very successful athletes. When you have been around as long as I have, running high level tournaments and camps all over the globe, you recognize those intangibles. They are rare and hard to find as a coach.
When we (coaches) find someone that we feel has that desire, passion, dream, work ethic, singular focus, we try and cultivate it.
We challenge these players not just on the court, but off the court. Do they have the “lifestyle”, the will to give everything up in their chase of this dream. Many fail when presented with these “off the court tasks”. Mateo did not! He is different! He has what I have seen before in the greatest of players!
This season proved that as he greatly overachieved and posted numbers many outside of his family and myself would have thought possible. I always thought it was very possible. Mateo always did what I said because he believed it would lead to greatness.
Mateo always wanted it so bad, nothing got in his way. It was basketball 24/7 and no distractions, no bad friends, no bad social life, just all basketball, all the time and he would never let anyone jeopardize that goal of playing at the highest levels.
Look at the numbers!!!! They DO NOT LIE!!! NATIONALLY RANKED!! And as the announcers for his game against Duke said numerous times, “HE IS THE BEST PLAYER ON THE FLOOR!”
Very proud of Mateo and know that he will only get better and better. He will be playing this game for a long time!!!
