Another Super Showdown in the books! Colorado drivers did outstanding across the board this weekend. In Kid Kart, Jerome Rondeau captured 2nd place in the championship, taking several heat wins along the way. Young brother Max was speedy as well...when he wasn’t sleepy!
Junior 1 competitor Spencer Smith was in the hunt all day Saturday, picking off drivers in heat races as they made mistakes. With 3rd place points on the line, a spin late Saturday, and less familiarity with the track direction on Sunday made the final heats a challenge. Still, Spencer emerged with a smile and will be much stronger for the experience.
Junior 2 was exciting as Dave Williams, Timmy Trostel, and newly minted Junior 2 Tyler Pompian all mixed it up. Williams showed marked improvement from his first year at the showdown, racing with Trostel near the top 5. Both drivers had several top 5 finishes, with Trostel taking 4th overall in the championship. Pompian grew stronger and stronger all weekend, learning and racing with some of the countries’ best in his debut race.
Last but certainly not least was the Senior drivers, and wow Seth Axelson was on fire this weekend! Each heat Axelson got faster, and faster...and finally was challenging for the top spot on the podium in the final heat, taking 3rd in final points. Austin Chalman also was in the mix, taking a couple top 5s and soldiering on through some rough driving by local racers.
Sure, it’s a long drive to get to Phoenix. Sure, it’s a bit more expensive. But for the racers that went, battling new drivers, battling a new tire, massive amounts (comparably) of rubber, new rules, etc. etc. is what will make racers better.
