One of San Diego’s most recognizable landmarks was at the center of a decades-long legal battle.

On this day, President George W. Bush signed legislation transferring the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial from the City of San Diego to the federal government as the fight over the cross continued.

20 years later, it still stands above San Diego.

San Diego was seriously considering something that sounds almost impossible today: moving the region’s commercial airport to Miramar.

On this day, the final ballot language was delivered to the Registrar of Voters, setting the stage for San Diego County voters to decide whether officials should pursue roughly 3,000 acres of MCAS Miramar for a new commercial airport.

The vision could have dramatically reshaped this part of San Diego.
