I was always into card games as a kid. From losing my favorite cards in Pokemon matches, to my dad taking me to Toys R Us for Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments, to having no idea how Magic the Gathering worked. Great memories.

Nowhere in the design process of Combatch did I think I'd be asked every day after class if we can play. Of course I wanted it to be fun but this is a pleasant surprise. They love it! I feel so honored there there's a chance these mornings might turn into those memories.

From humble beginnings... If you don't know the story, several years ago one of my student's parents asked me if there was a BJJ card game. After some searching the only thing we could find was a poker deck with BJJ moves on them. Still cool but not what we were looking for. As a huge nerd in the back of my mind I couldn't help but try and see what a BJJ card game might actually look like. I made some prototypes, played some games, got stuck, took breaks, had epiphanies and started all over, again and again.

I got the game to a place I liked and needed artwork. A good friend of mine helped me initially but due to creative differences (I'm picky and stubborn) I ended up doing it all myself. Her initial work helped shape the overall direction and I'm very grateful. I made a small order and loved how they turned out. I made a second order at the end of the year and am overjoyed with the reception I'm getting from everyone who has tried it.

The very exciting news is I put it my two weeks notice at the coffee shop I work at the other day and am ready to take this full time! Scary but exciting. Let's see what 2021 holds!
