That is the kind of sentence that stays with us. 💙

Thomas Parks’ mother recently shared what her family has experienced since Thomas became part of the UNIFIED Esports League.

She told us they are grateful for the influence the program has had on his life + excited by the progress they have seen. She specifically identified growth in memory, multitasking + decision-making—skills that can matter far beyond a gaming session.

But she also shared something equally meaningful:

A pizza party might look like the celebration—but the real win happened in all the little moments that earned it. 🍕🏆

Our Poway UNIFIED Technology Center recently became the first UESL location to reach its monthly goal through our new player points program, earning the entire group their first pizza party!

Throughout the month, players had opportunities to earn points through positive choices like good sportsmanship, attendance, participation, helping another player + contributing positively to their UNIFIED community. Those individual actions then worked toward something bigger: one shared goal for the whole group.

That distinction matters to us.

We don’t want recognition to belong only to the person who wins the game, learns a skill the fastest or speaks the loudest. Progress can look different for every person we serve. By recognizing a wider range of positive actions, our coaches can celebrate clients for the meaningful ways they are growing + contributing. 💜

Poway’s players reached their goal together—and their celebration included pizza from Pizzabilities, a San Diego organization providing employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Supporting other organizations creating opportunities for the IDD community is incredibly important to us, and we’re grateful to the Pizzabilities team for helping us celebrate this first milestone. Thank you, Pizzabilities! 🍕💜

There’s something powerful about hearing someone describe a place they love in their own words. 💙

For UNIFIED client Adam, one of his favorite parts of being here is straightforward: hanging out + playing games like Super Smash Bros. and TowerFall.

But underneath that simple answer is something we believe every individual deserves—the opportunity to have a place where their interests help them connect with others.

For individuals with IDD, shared interests can become natural starting points for interaction. A favorite game can create a reason to start a conversation, join a group, practice teamwork, navigate winning + losing, encourage someone else or simply spend time alongside peers.

Those everyday experiences are part of why UNIFIED Technology Centers are intentionally designed to be more than gaming spaces.

Our IDD-trained coaches support clients at a 1:3 coach-to-client ratio, creating opportunities for technology exploration + social-emotional growth while getting to know the individual behind the controller.

We also recognize that progress is personal.

Each client has an Individualized Technology Education Plan (ITEP) that helps identify goals + areas of development, while bi-monthly progress reports give families meaningful insight into what their loved one is working toward and the growth our coaches are seeing.

The goal isn’t to turn every interaction into a lesson.

It’s to create a safe + supportive environment where clients can explore what they enjoy, build relationships, practice skills + become increasingly confident being themselves.

For individuals with IDD, could virtual reality become another place to safely practice skills for the real world? 🥽

Research is beginning to give us some fascinating answers.

A peer-reviewed study examined immersive VR training in 32 adults with intellectual disabilities. Participants practiced sorting everyday waste items into the appropriate bins inside a virtual environment.

Within 10 training sessions, 19 of the 32 participants—or 59.4%—reached the researchers’ learning target of approximately 90% accuracy.

But what happened outside of VR is especially interesting.

Participants demonstrated significant improvement on the real-world version of the task after training, and those improvements were still present at a delayed assessment. Researchers concluded that VR facilitated learning for most participants and demonstrated evidence of real-world transfer + skill generalization.

More recent research continues to explore this potential. A 2024 study comparing immersive VR with a non-immersive virtual environment found that the immersive group performed significantly better on a real-world assessment after training + at a one-week follow-up.

This is the kind of research that helps inform how we think about technology at the UNIFIED Esports League.

Inside our Technology Centers, VR is part of a broader technology education environment supported by IDD-trained coaches. Technology provides the opportunity to explore. Our coaches provide the human guidance, encouragement + individualized support around that experience.

And importantly, emerging research doesn't mean VR works equally for every individual or every skill. Research published in 2025 found improvements in VR performance while also identifying limitations in transferring some cognitive-motor skills into real-world tasks—reinforcing why technology should be thoughtfully integrated with practical learning + individualized support.

The UNIFIED Esports League is currently seeking schools, districts + community organizations interested in becoming location partners for future UNIFIED Technology Centers across San Diego + Imperial Counties.

So, what exactly does that mean?

A location partner provides the physical space where a UNIFIED Technology Center can take root. UESL brings our specialized program model into that environment, creating a space where individuals with intellectual + developmental disabilities can engage with technology while developing communication, teamwork, confidence, social-emotional skills + meaningful relationships.

Inside our programs, clients are supported by IDD-trained coaches at a 1:3 coach-to-client ratio and given opportunities to explore technology including gaming systems, PCs, VR, simulators, graphic design + more.
