As we near my Dad's first heavenly birthday, so many memories come to mind, and I'm realizing how much I miss hearing the stories I think I heard at least 50 times and his laugh. Knowing there were many stories my son never heard, or even I didn't hear, makes me sad. Some days, I would give anything to hear his voice.

I'm determined to not let that happen with my Mom. I want to be able to hear her voice and her stories, the funny ones and the lessons learned. And I want my son and eventually his kids to hear them, too. So I'm having a friend of mine who does legacy videos come to do one with my Mom, and I'm thinking there may be some of you in the San Angelo area who may want to take advantage of the opportunity to do it as well.

She will be here for one week sometime in November. The date isn't set until I see if anyone else wants to have a video made and when it works for them.

If you are interested, message me and we'll see if we can work things out. This is going to be my Christmas present to myself.

The Trump/Harris Debate Challenge...

Does even the thought of watching the debate tonight cause you to break out in hives? I know many people are gearing up for the big "confrontation" and have expectations about how their "side" will do.

Can I challenge the status quo a bit (the way we normally do things) and invite you to take a slightly different approach - maybe do something Bigger, Better, Bolder than normal?

I think we can all agree that at some point in the debate, our emotions will get triggered in the negative direction. And we can tell it because our hearts start beating faster, our breathing gets shallow, our stomach and/or fists are clenched, and we start making angry comments to our TVs. Some of us louder than others.

What if, instead, we sit down to watch, acknowledging that at some point we'll probably get irritated (let's at least be honest) but make the choice to Pause, Breathe, and Get Curious?

What was actually said?

If you were an alien watching it, with no prior background or opinion, would you agree?

And if so, could this possibly be a point of connection with people on "the other side" of the spectrum? A starting point for further curious conversations around how we might get to a good place together instead of writing each other off just because we support one person or the other?

Tonight, I'm going to intentionally watch with curiosity, using my logic brain to search for the best in people and where we are ALIKE, instead of using my emotion brain and criticism to try to identify where we are different. Because I know if we continue to focus on our differences, we will continue to step further apart, instead of acknowledging our similarities and moving to creatively solve problems together.

I know I'm going to have to Pause, Breathe, and Get Curious because I know I'll get triggered. But we all have a choice whether we stay triggered or not. I want to live a Bigger, Better, Bolder life.

I am a Status Quo Rebel. (I think Jesus may have been one, too.)

Many years ago, I began teaching school for this exact reason - a few teachers had taken the time to pour into me, and they changed my life.

When I retired from teaching, I felt a little bit lost, like I had lost my purpose.

But working with companies as a leadership coach, I came to realize something really important. Bosses are just as impactful and for possibly longer periods of time than teachers are.

I've had a few absolutely wonderful bosses in my life, and one of the main reasons they impacted me was because they appreciated my contributions and took the time to know me as a person.

Tomorrow is Employee Appreciation Day, and I want to encourage all of you who supervise employees to do this one thing for your employees...

Don't just give a gift or flowers, etc. but take the time to talk to your employees. Ask about their families, their plans for the weekend, anything that will give you a glimpse of who they are as a person. That will be the best gift of all.

And for those of us who've had great bosses, take the time to thank them for the impact they've had on your life.

So for me, thank you Dr. Maurice Shelton, JoAnn Rice, David Laird, and Mike Dixon. You made a lasting impact on my life, and I'm grateful!
