Barridas from the Back Ocho

This week we explored Barridas from the back ocho using the same catch position we found in the forward ocho.

The key difference is the leader's orientation. Rather than pointing the foot directly at the follower, rotate the hips slightly to create space for the Barrida to happen naturally. This small adjustment makes the movement feel much more comfortable and gives the sweeping action room to develop.

As the follower arrives in the back ocho, pause for a moment and notice the shape. The leader creates the position by drawing the follower into the step rather than reaching for it. Once the alignment is there, the Barrida becomes less about moving the foot and more about sharing space together.

Practice Cue:
Create the space first. Then let the Barrida happen.

Sacadas: Front Body, Back Body

Today's Sacada was about using the front and back body as a form of counterbalance.

When taking a front step, expand the back body—the back of the neck, head, ribs, and hips—as though you're putting on a large cloak. This creates support and resistance so you don't simply fall forward.

When taking a back step, expand the front body—the chest, neck, ribs, and hips—to create support as you move backward.

The magic of the Sacada comes from this constant exchange. To go forward, organize backward. To go backward, organize forward. This creates the stretch, elasticity, and spaciousness that make the movement feel effortless and alive.

Practice Cue:
Go back to go forward. Come forward to go back.

Ocho Cortado: The Dance of Rock and Check

Today we explored two very different qualities of movement inside the Ocho Cortado.

Rock Steps: Soft and Flowing

In a rock step, we genuinely transfer our weight.

Land with a soft knee.
Allow your weight to arrive fully before changing direction.
Feel the movement absorb into the floor.
Think: swing, rebound, flow.

When done well, the rock step feels comfortable and grounded, like a gentle wave moving through the body.

Practice Cue:
"Can I arrive completely before I leave?"

Check Steps: Organized and Precise

A check step is a different animal.

Instead of transferring weight, we interrupt it.

Keep the standing leg long and organized.
Maintain your height.
Use the smallest amount of movement possible.
Think: pause, suspend, redirect.

The goal is not force. The goal is clarity.

For leaders, the follower should feel the idea of the movement before the movement itself. A tiny change in your body should communicate everything.

For followers, extend comfortably and allow the body to respond naturally. There is no prize for staying perfectly off-axis. Comfort comes first.

Practice Cue:
"Can I do less and communicate more?"

Intro to Barridas

A good sweep isn't about moving your partner's foot. It's about staying so balanced that your free leg can play.

Think Footsie

Get settled over your standing leg, then let the free leg wander, nudge, and sweep. If your whole body has to come along for the ride, you're working too hard.

The Magic

The more stable you are, the more playful your feet can be. Great barridas feel less like pushing and more like a game of footsie.

Intro to Sacadas

A sacada is not about taking a step, it is about exchanging space with your partner.

How it works

One person opens the front body to receive a step while the other organizes into the back body to enter safely.

The key principle

When both dancers are correctly organized, one moving into openness and the other into support, the space between them becomes clear enough for precise, safe interruption of the line.

The Zero Step

The zero step is a full stop where you completely leave the previous movement and return to listening.

Why it matters
It breaks the habit of nonstop stepping so you can reconnect with the music instead of carrying momentum.

What it does
When you stop fully, you hear the phrase clearly and your next movement begins from the music, not from impulse.

The cross is not a position you memorize. It is a movement pattern you develop.

You learn it by standing securely on one leg, freeing the other leg to move, and gradually progressing from touch, to check, to step, to full weight transfer.

Tango Mantra:

"Find the movement, not the shape."
