When I first started FP I had a number of injuries and lingering pain from years of weightlifting, yoga and wrestling. My low back constantly ached no matter what I did. I had multiple torn intercostals, slipped ribs, whiplash injuries to my neck all which resulted in a 9/10 lower back pain. A 6/10 daily in my lower t spine. I can remember if I would sneeze it would throw my back out and felt as if I had the wind knocked out of me… at 22 i felt like an old man. I studied and applied yoga (and other mobility practices) for over 7 years operating with the logic of “I’m lifting and wrestling all the time that’s making me tight, I need something that will loosen me up. I did dead hangs and chiro looking for some form of decompression and relief. These were obviously a limited way of looking at reality. I did the STEM machine our athletic trainers would recommend, heat and ice before and after every practice as well as a rigorous stretching routine for my low back, t spine, neck and hips trying to mediate the pain. Thankfully FP gave me the tools, mentality, and clarity to be able to address the flaws in my approach and thinking. I started nourishing my body with the FPF4 and respecting what we are designed to do most which is stand, walk, run and throw. As soon as I felt those connections I could feel my body intuitively want more despite my skepticism and lack of mental understanding of what these exercises were at the time in 2017 and 2018. The Human Foundations course helped me immensely by teaching me to apply on my own and by that point my pain levels were already plummeting despite still actively competing in wrestling.

CRIPPLING BACK PAIN GONE AND POSTURE IMPROVEMENTS

I was diagnosed with scoliosis in high school. I ran track and cross country at the time and experienced crippling back pain. I was sent to PT in order to stretch my hamstrings. I ran 3 marathons and a couple half marathons in the years after high school. I became a personal trainer and tried strengthening my back with traditional weight lifting. By the time I was 25 I had given up running completely due to my back pain and left the field of personal training. I went to the chiropractor, got massages, tried acupuncture, pain medication, and more PT. In the following decade my back pain continued to increase. Due to herniated discs in my low back, I was prescribed narcotics , nerve pain medication, benzodiazepines, muscle relaxers, and got cortisone injections into my lower spine. I was able to get off all of those medications eventually but the pain was still severe and debilitating. I tried more PT and chiro. I began working through some of the myofascial release in the Power of Posture book in the winter of 2022 which provided great relief. In late October 2022, I started training at FP MN weekly. Within a few weeks I felt much less pain, and within a few months my pain was reduced to a mild feeling of tightness at times. After 9 months of FP, 20 years of dealing with near constant back pain now feels like a distant memory. I am able to move in ways I never thought possible without pain.

Posted • You don’t have to live your life dealing with chronic pain stemming from disc herniations. When you take a systems approach to training your body, great things can happens. Great work by FP practitioner .john.parr getting himself out of pain and into a better functioning body.

This photo shows my personal results after applying  for 1 year.

I herniated my L5-S1 twice and had a discectomy the first time I herniated it. I seemed to be recovering fine after the surgery but herniated it for the second time a year later. I was in chronic pain for 5 years after having the second herniation. I tried all sorts of different approaches to address my pain including exercise, yoga, physical therapy, chiropractic, and massage therapy. I realized the surgery only fixed the symptom that resulted from moving poorly over time and that I would need to get to the root of my problem by fixing the way I move. Eventually I found  and after several months of applying the concepts I learned, I started waking up without the chronic pain I thought I would live with forever. Over the next year I still had to be very intentional on how I lived and trained so that I didn’t have set backs. Today my body is very resilient and don’t have pain after running or jumping which would have put me out of commission for weeks prior to applying .

Thanks to  and the  team for helping me apply relevant solutions to my problems.

Posted • The FP First 4 is crucial for achieving the results you’re looking for. Focusing on these foundational movements allows you to move athletically and pain-free while slowing down the degeneration of your body over time. By aligning training with what our environment naturally drives us to do, we tap into the governing natural laws of our bodies. Physics applies not only to structures like the Empire State Building but also to our bodies, posture, and the way we move.

What are the most important movements parents strive for their children to learn? Are these movements also important for us to maintain as we age into our 70s, 80s, and beyond? Standing, walking, running, and throwing top that list. In fact, all other forms of movement directly stem from the FP First 4.

Other systems often focus on movements beyond this foundation. Since improving someone’s running mechanics is a difficult task, most systems focus on teaching flashy, eye-catching movements that offer very little meaningful change in overall mechanics. At Functional Patterns, we’ve discovered the formula that makes attaining lasting results possible.

Athletes like Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, and Deion Sanders excelled in multiple sports because standing, walking, running, and throwing are the common denominators in high-level performance. Mastering these functions increases the likelihood of seamlessly transitioning between different types of human movement.

We don’t make these claims solely based on the foundation of our training system. Nature has led us to this understanding because our movements are dictated by our environment. Planet Earth sets the rules: prioritizing the FP First 4 in training creates a body that moves and reacts in ways that promote long-term health, minimizing degeneration and pain over time.

Posted • THE FP HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

At FP we prioritize activities that lead to regeneration. Meaning, if said activity does not help aid the creation of new tissue in our bodies to replace injured/old tissue or to bring into existence new patterns of behavior that will lead to an improved outlook on reality, then we don’t bother.

We feel that the point of doing the activities we do in life should lead improved health and longer time spent here on planet earth 🌎. If you’re someone who is seeking to attain better health while helping to create a more symbiotic environment around you, then give the FP hierarchy of needs a try.

Get sun ☀️ daily when available to you to help set your circadian rhythm so that you can get a good nights rest 🌙. During the day make sure to spend some time thinking about your bodies mechanics and correcting dysfunctions to help you function efficiently over time 🏃🏻‍♀️ . Make sure to hydrate 💧 yourself so that your body can function better and process the nutritious organic foods 🍎 you eat.

Throughout the week do things to help manage your stress 🧠 like getting an intentional FP training session in 🏃🏻or utilizing heart rate variability tools ❤️. Also, be sure to learn something new that will help you gain or improve upon relevant skills 💡.

Lastly, try and get some time out in nature 🌲. Whether it’s the park down the street or a drive out to a more isolated area, we feel it’s important (especially for city dwellers) to get outside and learn to tune into the boredom. Find a quite spot somewhere to sit down, look around you and think. Think about your problems and what you can do to solve them.
