A statewide task force just wrapped up a massive week-long crackdown on human trafficking, making over 600 arrests and rescuing 170 victims. Among those saved were children as young as 13. The operation, called "Reclaim and Rebuild," also led to the confiscation of several weapons. Authorities are now calling on state leaders to make trafficking adults a felony, as it currently is only a misdemeanor.

The past few years have really driven home the need for Community to support Community, and to that end Shameless Grounds will be doing something new: Monthly Mutual Aid (MMA-not to be confused with the other type of MMA; we're too old for that).

Each month we'll be choosing one organization, then we'll choose three or four menu items. At the end of the month, the organization will receive $1 for each of those menu items we sell.

Our choice for February is Thistl (Trans Housing Initiative St. Louis). If you aren't familiar with this organization, it is a trans-led organization committed to tackling systemic injustices in housing that transgender people face in the St. Louis region. THISTL’s vision is to build equitable access to shelter, housing, and home-ownership for transgender and gender-expansive humans. They strive to end homelessness and housing instability for trans and gender expansive adults. Check out their website to learn more about them or if you'd like to donate directly: Thi-stl.org

Since we're getting a late start with this new program and this month is also a short one, we've chosen four MMA (Monthly Mutual Aid) items...
Americano – hot or cold
Hot Tea or Fog
Breakfast Sandwiches
French Ticklers

So stop in this month, say hello, enjoy a tasty beverage and snack, and know that your money is staying in and helping out your Community.

We’re appalled by the recent legislation passed in MO that has resulted in school librarians yanking books off of their shelves. Banning books is a form of censorship that is used to target voices from marginalized communities.

As our owner, Kris Kleindienst explains,
“That’s not an accident, that’s intentional. It’s racist, homophobic strategy to really eliminate access to certain kinds of information, to indoctrinate young people in one really narrow, homophobic view. It’s antithetical to education, antithetical to democracy, to human rights…Students and other young readers deserve to open a book and see themselves in it, but it shouldn’t just be for people of color and q***r folks. White people and straight people have a responsibility to read the stories of marginalized voices.”

The Left Bank Books foundation began the Literacy and Justice Project in the spring of 2022 following a local school district banning specific books. The titles currently included are and (not pictured). If you need a copy of one of these books or would like to donate and help us make sure they get into the hands of people who need them the most- https://www.lbbfound.org/Page/21746

Other ways you can resist are speaking out, writing/calling your representatives, voting in your local elections, and organizing in your schools. It’s up to all of us to fight against book bans.
