Performance Science + Rehab is thrilled to announce the addition of Libby Bergman (.bergman) to the Performance PT team!

Libby’s ideal patient:

“I enjoy working with people who have complex musculoskeletal issues who have been told they have reached their potential— but they know in their heart they can do more. I like searching out of the box and across systems to make progress with seemingly unsolvable problems. I particularly enjoy connecting with clients who are passionate about pursuing their craft — whether that be endurance sports, performing arts, or fitness and wellness as a devotion to personal development”.

To The Amazing Performance Science & Rehab Clients,
This week marks the one-year anniversary of Performance Science & Rehab opening its doors! I cannot put into words the gratitude I feel for each of you. Your support and referrals have enabled the opportunity for PSR to thrive.
In year one, PSR has been able to service 150 Saint Augustine (and surrounding area) residents! This blows my mind and am extremely humbled that each of you have entrusted PSR with helping you along your journey to return to your high-performance activity. Special shout out must go to , , and for providing the platform to operate PSR within such an unbelievable community.
Really excited for what is to come this next year! Thank you again for your support!

Thank you for the kind words 🤙🏻

“Before meeting Steve, I had been out of the water for over a year from an injury caused by a chiropractor adjustment gone wrong. As a former competitive surfer and Surf Industry sales rep -being out of the water for a year was brutal. I had sold all my surfboards and just thought surfing was behind me.

In my first meeting with Steve he did a very thorough assessment, more detailed then the orthopedic surgeon. He quickly pin pointed my issue and came up with a game plan.

Steves approach is very innovative, scientific and different then anything I had experienced up to that point. I dedicated myself to the process and was back in the water surfing in 3 months. His commitment to me and return to performance approach is unmatched. Thank you Steve for giving me my life back”.

Fun Fact Friday: Movement Skill Integration Following Injury

🦵🏻Single limb motor control and mobility deficits are common following knee injury.

🦴Hip and ankle stiffness can compromise the force absorption capabilities of the lower extremity resulting in unnecessary tissue stress (ligament, tendon, muscle, etc)around the knee.

🏋️‍♀️Furthermore, coordinating an explosive action (such as a quick stop or change of direction) is a high level nervous system task that requires reintegration back into the system during the return-to-play process.

💡A simple framework to consider when reintegrating the lower limb into demands tasks:

✅Mobility (above and below)➡️ Motor control

✅Double limb ➡️ Single Limb

✅Absorption ➡️ Propulsion

✅No implement ➡️ Implement.

🏀 is demonstrating exceptional lower limb control after completing a 3-week progression mentioned above. Well done!

Thank you for the kind words !

“Last year I developed a persistent SI Joint pain. For someone who’s never experienced anything like that before I was extremely lucky to have found Steve when I did. I was scared.

This pain impeded my ability to caretake for my husband who has ALS. Steve knew how important it was to get me moving again, not only for my well-being, but also for that of my husband. Steve reassured me that we had several avenues to help combat the pain and was really patient when answering my unending questions.

He has developed both short and long term solutions to actively manage my pain. He has also guided my training for climbing so that I can remain high performing while still prioritizing my health for caretaking. He’s been an invaluable ally and I highly recommend him for any and all PT needs”.

Fun Fact Friday: Objectifying your Return-to-Performance Process (www.performancesciencerehab.com)

✅The return-to-play process is multi-faceted and unique to each individual.

✅Movement competency (ability for the neuromuscular system to coordinate patterns ), Strength (ability for our neuromuscular system to generate force), and Power(ability for our neuromuscular system to express force generation quickly) are physical abilities that can be measured to understand where an individual is starting from so appropriate planning can be applied to bridge deficits.

✅Understanding an individual's high-performance training demands (Movement qualities, Strength-Velocity profile, Fatigue-Resistance, Metabolic emphasis) is critical to ensure appropriate training stimuli are organized and progressively applied to minimize set-backs during a RTP process.

✅If you are struggling with an injury that is keeping you side-lined, Performance Science + Rehab would be honored to support you through your journey!

Thank you for the kind words !

I’ve been climbing for roughly ten years now (I think…you start to lose track). It’s my hobby and I LOVE it. It’s where I met my husband, it’s where I made most of my friends, and it’s where I go to push myself both physically and mentally. I recently suffered a shoulder injury while on a climbing trip, and went to see Steve. He was able to understand my mentality of wanting to constantly perform and push, and was able to work with me. It took some time, largely because I did not want to slow down during peak outdoor season. Not only did he work with my training schedule to rehab my shoulder, but he strengthened it at the same time. I’m now pain free, and back into full training mode thanks to Steve!

Fun Fact Friday: Understanding Isometric Strength

💪🏼Stronger individuals are able to move with greater efficiency, express movement more explosively, and are better prepared to remain durable when exposed to increasing training demands.

✅Decreases in strength have been associated with increased incidence of injury in sporting environments. Additionally, strength testing is used to monitor fatigue and determine training readiness throughout a training week.
Isometric contractions are those where no movement (very little joint movement) occurs at the joint.

✅Testing isometric strength is a great way to safely quantify how much force an individual can produce and various joint angles.

✅Coupled with movement competency, understanding how well an individual produces force is the starting point for all exercise prescriptions when bridging the rehab-performance gap.

If you are interested in taking the guesswork out of your return-to-play process don’t hesitate to reach out!
