INJURY RISK OF JUMPING GUARD
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••
In 2021 I collected injury trend data from an IBJJF event (nogi pans). There were 83 injuries, 15 of those coming from takedowns. 1/3 of the takedown injuries occurred specifically from a guard jump.

Unfortunately injury trend data does not capture the severity of injury associated with a knee hyperextension due to falling bodyweight.

The BJJ injury epidemiology paper is currently in the peer review process.

Did Platinum Mike dislocate his shoulder own shoulder or was it because of Jenkins’s offense?
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
This weekend at Duel: Arena Mike Perry unfortunately dMike Perryhis shoulder in his fight.

My original hypothesis:
Incidents of shoulder instability during striking is more associated with wide rotational strikes. More often injury occur during non contact events, such as when a punch misses or in this case the wind up. The wind up stretches the anterior capsule of the glenohumeral joint making anterior dislocations more possible.

Then his opponent B-jenks DMed me showing meB-jenkserent angle. Perry had a tight collartie with his left hand when Jenkins’s hit him with the elbow. This was when the injury occurred.

Should adduction tension + sudden jerk to the left could have caused anterior translation of the glenohumeral joint ie shoulder dislocation.

The question here: did Perry have a pre existing injury or was this chronically acquired shoulder instability from sport. Unfortunately his wild wide punching style does make him more prone to something like this.

Following the injury Perry attempted to keep fighting but was unable to intelligently defend himself and Jenkin’s took the win.

The danger of getting lifting off the ground: Spinal cord injury in Jiu Jitsu
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Even in competitions where slamming is illegal I ALWAYS advise not giving your opponent the opportunity to lift you off the ground.

While posting directly on his head and unfortunately here the athlete hooks the wrong leg so his opponent is still able to stand up.

this is the exact mechanism of injury that can result in a spinal cord injury. The injured athlete suffered a C5-6 spinal cord injury that required emergency surgery. It is unclear at this stage whether it was complete or incomplete.

A C5-C6 spinal cord injury affects the neck area, usually resulting in partial or complete paralysis of the arms, hands, trunk, and legs.

I hope for a full recovery to the injured athlete Willian Hiroyuki Masuda

How did Larry Wheels tear his BICEPS?
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Here we see an example of a boxing injure his arm throwing a read hook. As his opponent steps back he is forced to over reach. Upon impact the Wheels suffered a proximal biceps tear.

Most musclotendinous structures get damaged while in a LENGTHENED state.
Either poor eccentric control or poor ballistic control from the lengthened position

Larry Wheels had a history of poor tendon health as he tore his LEFT biceps tendon prior to the fight!
