KICKBOXING! Joined a kickboxing class at KUMA FIT in S**o last night. We jabbed and roundhoused and knocked the daylights out of some freestanding heavy bags.

KUMA Fit is a dedicated women's kickboxing gym, and owner Stacy Kim has created a welcoming space where women can engage their bodies, find community, and embrace their badassery.

LADIES MOUNTAIN BIKE CLINIC. Worked on body position, braking, and looking through turns during tonight's beginner mountain biking clinic - a collaboration between Woods + Waters Gear Exchange and Youth Cycle Project. We took to the trails at Bradbury Mountain, too, but I was too busy yelling "weeeeeee!" and "oh s**t!" to take any photos. 🚵‍♀️ 😃

Other learnings: talk to horses, say a prayer for the squirrels, and when you're riding uphill, lean yer b***s to the bars.
An awesome crew of instructors - Lenora, Jill, Nola, Tim, and the Young Shredder whose name I can't recall but she is Young Shredder to me forever now.

More clinics to come this summer and fall. $10 helps support the Youth Cycle Project. Check the Youth Cycle Project and Woods and Waters Gear social accounts to find out about those in future!

SUNSET CANOE. During a sunset or full moon canoe tour at the Scarborough Marsh Maine Audubon Center, you’ll paddle your canoe on the winding Dunstan River, watching egrets and glossy ibises stand watch over the tall grasses of the Scarborough Marsh as the sun goes down and the moon comes up.

The Scarborough Marsh is filled with all sorts of marsh wildlife, and your tour will be led by a knowledgeable guide who can help you spot and name the birds and fish as well as the stars and planets in the night sky once it gets dark enough to see them.

The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center hosts sunset and full moon paddles throughout the summer. No previous canoe experience is necessary; you’ll be in good hands on mellow waters.

Read all about it in this week's Portland Phoenix.

HOW WE ROLL. Got acquainted with roller skis today with a workshop led by Portland Nordic on the closed-off street of Baxter Boulevard in Portland. Portland Nordic is known for their winter work: namely xc ski programs and helping the city make Riverside on standout place for xc skiing for everyone.

This summer they acquired a fleet of roller skis for their skiers to use, but also to we grownups can give the skate a try, work on our form, and be better skiers this winter.

and I rolled with glee. I tipped over twice, but it was very graceful. 😬 A fine Sunday challenge. The workshops continue all summer, one Sunday morning a month. Check Portland Nordic's page for future workshops. Gear is provided, class size limited.

Thank you Portland Nordic for the great lesson and tips and welcoming chance to try something new!

WATERFALL HUNT SUCCESS! While it rained on the coast, Rangeley was drenched in sunshine, so we seized the opportunity to hunt some waterfalls. The key to a successful hunt is to quietly creep up on the falling water and to be mindful not to scare it off. We scented ourselves with smells familiar to waterfalls by showering with water before our hunt.

Not to worry: we are catch-and-release waterfall hunters, so the falls remain in their locations for your enjoyment.

Water spotted includes: Coos Canyon, Angel Falls, Cascade Stream Gorge, and Smalls Falls. All are in the Rangeley/Sandy River Plantation area and can be combined in a day trip.

Short hike to Angel Falls in Franklin County. Plus watermelon at the waterfall, because I am super into themed snacks.

SLOW AS S* RUN GROUP! Met up with the welcoming crew of the S.A.S Running group, which meets at 7:30 am every Sunday for a go-at-your-own-pace run on the scenic (and flat!) Eastern Trail in Scarborough. (Meet at the lot off Pine Point Road.)
The group was started by a few running friends from Scarborough in 2018, but the runs took an understandable hiatus last year. They're back at it, and open to runners, joggers, jog-walkers of all levels.
Look for a full story soon in the Portland Phoenix.
And thanks to the The Eastern Trail for their efforts to create and maintain this stunning location - a gem for bikers, walkers, and birders!

The Orono Bog Boardwalk is open!

Bogs are champions of long-term storage. Formed over hundreds or thousands of years, bogs are masters at trapping carbon, hoarding dead plants, and hanging on to the occasional 3,000-year-old body.

There probably aren't any bodies at the Orono Bog, but they do have carnivorous plants, a cool-as-heck boardwalk, and valuable ecosystem!
