LADIES MOUNTAIN BIKE CLINIC. Worked on body position, braking, and looking through turns during tonight's beginner mountain biking clinic - a collaboration between Woods + Waters Gear Exchange and Youth Cycle Project. We took to the trails at Bradbury Mountain, too, but I was too busy yelling "weeeeeee!" and "oh s**t!" to take any photos. 🚵‍♀️ 😃

Other learnings: talk to horses, say a prayer for the squirrels, and when you're riding uphill, lean yer b***s to the bars.
An awesome crew of instructors - Lenora, Jill, Nola, Tim, and the Young Shredder whose name I can't recall but she is Young Shredder to me forever now.

HOW WE ROLL. Got acquainted with roller skis today with a workshop led by Portland Nordic on the closed-off street of Baxter Boulevard in Portland. Portland Nordic is known for their winter work: namely xc ski programs and helping the city make Riverside on standout place for xc skiing for everyone.

This summer they acquired a fleet of roller skis for their skiers to use, but also to we grownups can give the skate a try, work on our form, and be better skiers this winter.

and I rolled with glee. I tipped over twice, but it was very graceful. 😬 A fine Sunday challenge. The workshops continue all summer, one Sunday morning a month. Check Portland Nordic's page for future workshops. Gear is provided, class size limited.

WATERFALL HUNT SUCCESS! While it rained on the coast, Rangeley was drenched in sunshine, so we seized the opportunity to hunt some waterfalls. The key to a successful hunt is to quietly creep up on the falling water and to be mindful not to scare it off. We scented ourselves with smells familiar to waterfalls by showering with water before our hunt.

Not to worry: we are catch-and-release waterfall hunters, so the falls remain in their locations for your enjoyment.

Water spotted includes: Coos Canyon, Angel Falls, Cascade Stream Gorge, and Smalls Falls. All are in the Rangeley/Sandy River Plantation area and can be combined in a day trip.

SLOW AS S* RUN GROUP! Met up with the welcoming crew of the S.A.S Running group, which meets at 7:30 am every Sunday for a go-at-your-own-pace run on the scenic (and flat!) Eastern Trail in Scarborough. (Meet at the lot off Pine Point Road.)
The group was started by a few running friends from Scarborough in 2018, but the runs took an understandable hiatus last year. They're back at it, and open to runners, joggers, jog-walkers of all levels.
Look for a full story soon in the Portland Phoenix.
And thanks to the The Eastern Trail for their efforts to create and maintain this stunning location - a gem for bikers, walkers, and birders!

KAYAKING OLD S**O RIVER. Learned of this paddle from the wise Mainekayakgirl - coauthor of Paddling Southern Maine - a couple of years ago. It's a river-meets-pond treat in Fryeburg, where we wound our way on the mellow waters of Old S**o River before spilling out in Kezar Pond, with its marvelous views of the White Mountains, including snow-covered Mount Washington.

We commued with a loon, spotted a bald eagle, a few starlings, some mockingbirds, maybe 2 goldfinches (I can't tell the yellow birds apart), red-winged blackbirds, and a whole host of others I can't begin to try to ID. Scratch that, I am trying. Birds are hard.

Tiktok confuses me. There's some weeeeeird stuff over there. But I just followed some dude who learned me how to make a compass with stick and 4 piles of rocks, so that's cool.

FIRE! Learned to make fire with a bowdrill today with Zack of Rewild Maine - he's been leading classes teaching cool skills like fire starting and basket making from his backyard on Portland's East End (typically classes are held elsewhere, but covid prompted some shifts in location).
Rewild Maine's teachers share all kinds of skills that reconnect us with nature and history - and learning new things is always awesome.
Thank you, Zack, for the welcoming instruction! and I are coming back to learn how to make that hat.

The gulls saw me and I think figured a boat-sized pile of cole slaw couldn't be far behind. Frankly I wish there'd been, too. The world could use more cole slaw.
