This last week as Coach, I introduced an idea to our team, something for us all to gather around in the good and in the hard. Each player wrote a word on a ball, a mental approach or a reminder. After each game we add another word to this ball to describe our process for that game. Patience, grit, focus, trust, next step, whatever describes how the game went or what we needed to work on, aside from results. It’s physical, it’s mental, it creates unity, it improves culture! It is present in our dugout and visible! Coaches, how are you implementing and teaching culture? What experiences do you have? What tools do you use?

Excuses vs Discipline: I had a High School football coach that preached “Excuses make you Lose Power”. I always tried to be the young athlete that avoided excuse making, but it wasn’t always easy! Looking back it is easy to recognize times when I lacked confidence and how that correlated directly with excuse making, and not taking ownership over everything that was in my control! If you are lacking confidence where you thinking you should have it, take a step back to evaluate your mindset…are you making excuses or are you taking ownership?

Competitive Pyramid: How often do we talk about the game being mental and physical, then turn around and only focus on the physical ex*****on? We have all been there! Sure we canal learn the physical skills and physically execute, but will it be at our absolute best? What if we saw ex*****on at the top of the pyramid rather than the foundation? Stabilize your foundations on culture development and mental skills and then see where your ex*****on really takes you!!

Reset after mistakes: Yes, even we as coaches need to learn this skill, if we want our athletes to. If we want them to be mental performers, we need to lead by example.
