1) Pick the heaviest ball you can handle.
It’ll swing better and knock down more pins, not ricochet off like a lighter ball. Most guys need at least 14 pounds; women, at least 10. Also, use the one with the smallest holes you can fit in.

2) Hold it right.
Pick the ball up with two hands; put your middle and ring fingers into it, then your thumb. Bend your elbow at hip height, so your arm looks like an “L,” then throw, letting the thumb leave the ball first while the fingers lift and roll it.

3) Keep your eye on the ball, not the pins.
There are arrows on the lane—try to roll the ball over the second mark in from the gutter, toward the head pin. “Reach” your hand toward the mark, then up to the ceiling. Once you let go, watch the ball to see if it hits the mark. If it doesn’t, move your feet left or right or pick a different mark.

Bowling is a sport that many people play for recreation all over the world. Playing this game casually often involves late nights, black lights and a lot of alcohol. However, there is also a very serious, professional, side to the sport. The highest levels of competition are even televised on national TV. While there are many styles of bowling that have become successful, it is always imperative to pick one that works for you. One such style that may require special work is the two-finger bowling style.

Holding the Ball
Before you ever throw a ball with two fingers, you need to understand how to hold it. Your middle and ring finger should be in the two forward holes. If they don't fit all the way in, it's all right -- you are most likely holding a finger-tip ball, which is good for curvature and safety. The weight of the ball should rest in the palm of your hand, and your thumb should be extended up the back of the ball for stability and support. Your index and pinky fingers should be extended as well for lateral balance. The ball should remain in the palm of your hand until your throw has accelerated the ball enough so it does not fall straight down when you begin to twist your wrist. This point will normally be somewhere just beyond the point where your arm is straight down during the throw.

Physics
Knowing the physics behind bowling is the first and most important step to mastering any bowling style. You have to understand how and why a ball curves as it goes down the lane in order to make adjustments for it. The ball curves because as it comes off your hand, you rotate your hand from palm up to palm sideways, giving it a little bit of roll in addition to its forward momentum. Two-finger bowlers have the potential to make much greater turns, because the thumb is out of the way and not involved. By the same token, however, the thumb in traditional bowling adds stability and strength that you will lack when bowling with two fingers.

Adjustment
Knowing the physics, you can start to adjust your throw for the two-fingered style. Like marksmanship with a rifle, you only get better by throwing a lot of shots downrange. You can't make huge adjustments between every shot. For two-fingered bowlers, it is important to develop, over time, a style that gives you accurate control of both your spin and forward momentum, and a safe release that won't harm your fingers. Start off slow, as bowling with two fingers can be dangerous if done improperly. If your fingers are hurting, you are doing it wrong. Stop and seek the help of a coach. Alternatively, you might ask a bowling lane attendant: many are good bowlers themselves and can give you more pointers.

Making Spares
While any style can be successful in the long run, there is a reason the two-fingers-and-a-thumb style is preferred over the two-fingered style: the two-fingered style does not lend itself well to accuracy and repetition. Accuracy is hitting the "sweet spot," while repetition is hitting any spot from shot to shot. Therefore, you absolutely must practice for all spare scenarios. A bowler who knows how to hit his spares can bowl a 190 -- a really good score -- without bowling a single strike.

Techniques for a Better Bowling Score

How one holds the ball is almost always proportional to his or her score. For a chance at that elusive 300 (or for most of us, that elusive 100 to 200 score), it is important to hold the bowling ball in the correct position. In fact, this position can determine the entire course of the game. When holding the ball, examine the hole position and angle of the bowling ball as it leaves the hand. One key to holding the ball is to use slightly more gripping pressure on the finger pads of the hand than on the thumb pad, while maintaining consistent gripping pressure throughout the entire swing cycle. As new bowlers develop into better bowlers, the thumb should be released a split second before the fingers so that the fingers may impart the rotational action which causes the bowling ball to travel down the lane with an effective rolling and hooking motion. Like most sports, or frankly most aspects of life, it takes practice to improve, but once you see your bowling score reach new heights, you will enjoy the game of bowling all that much more.

How to Bowl

Understand the bowling lane. Before you begin to bowl, you have to understand the function of the bowling lane. A bowling lane is 60 feet (18.3 m) long from the foul line, the line closest to the bowler, to the head pin, the pin closest to the bowler. There are gutters on either side of the bowling lane. If a ball veers off the lane, it goes into the gutters and is out of play.[1]
The approach area is 15 feet (4.6 m) long and ends at the foul line. The bowler cannot overstep the foul line during their approach or their shot won't count
If a ball goes into the gutters and then bounces out and hits the pins, it won't count.

Start in an athletic, upright bowling stance. The most important thing is where you hold the ball. Put your fingers in the holes and balance the ball on your palm around stomach or chest height, using the opposite hand to support the weight. The ball should be slightly to the right side of your body in alignment with the right seam of your shirt (right handed bowlers). Your knees are slightly bent and your shoulders relaxed, and your left foot is on the big dot in the center of the lane (right-handers).
Keep your wrist strong so that the ball appears like a natural extension of your arm. You don't want your wrist to droop down towards the floor

What’s the Deal With Those Lane Markings in bowling?

🎳 BOARDS: There are 39 boards on a lane, about one inch wide. They help determine where to place your feet and target your shot, along with the three rows of dots on the approach. For your first shot, place your sliding shoe (it should be opposite of the hand you bowl with, so if you bowl with your right hand, it would be your left shoe) on the center dot of the first or second row. Once you find a good starting spot, be consistent for every first ball you throw.

🎳 FOUL LINE: The line that separates the approach from the playing surface and where the oiled surface begins.

🎳 DOTS AND ARROWS: These will help guide your ball into the pocket or to the pin you're trying to hit. The dots before the foul line guide your approach, and the dots after the line help you see where your ball is heading. Also for aim, at 15 feet past the foul line, seven arrows show the path of your ball.

🎳 BREAKPOINT: The part of the lane where your ball begins to hook back into the pocket (hopefully) and can show you the results of the targets you picked on the lane. If you're not achieving the shot you’re trying to make, adjust your alignment, target, ball, or throwing speed.
