In 1885, an experiment was conducted by the Children's Mission and the Massachusetts Emergency and Hygiene Association in Boston, MA. To improve the social conditions of local children, could a simple wood box with piles of sand provide a safe place for play, socialization and daily educational drills? Now cited as the beginning of the Recreation Movement in America, the success of this supervised sandbox quickly expanded to 21 playgrounds by 1889.
