Okay, so it probably wasn’t perfect and there are probably things that you wished you’d done differently. And real talk — there probably were some days you wanted to quit🙋🏾‍♀️.

But you are STILL here, your kids made progress, and so did you.

That is not nothing. That is worth celebrating.

A few years ago I led a workshop at a homeschool conference called the Art of Celebration.

I gave every mom a pom-pom and asked her to do something simple — reflect on the year and name what she accomplished.

What happened next I was not fully prepared for.

Moms who had never once stopped to look back at their year. Moms who could name every gap, every failure, every thing left undone — but could not find the words for what they had actually done. There was not a dry eye in the room.

The next year I came back to the conference. I was getting on the elevator. A mom was getting off. She stopped me right there in the doorway, gave me a hug, and said —

I still have that pom-pom. I look at it often to remind myself to look for the wins and celebrate.

Then she asked — you’re doing that session again this year right?

I said no. She said, I think you should. That needs to happen every single year.

She was right.

If you hold your breath through the whole year wondering if you are going to fail, and then wrap it up without exhaling and saying — wait. I made it. We accomplished something. Then you are just surviving the year.

Celebration is not a bonus. It is not a luxury. It is part of what makes this sustainable.

Nobody was making space for it. So I decided to.

I’ve been drinking tea my whole life. Like for real, it was the medicine of our home. Anytime we had anything that was bothering us or if we didn’t feel well my mom would make us a cup of tea. 

Hot. Steeped. The way I grew up drinking it. And honestly? I never questioned it.

Then I sat down at this tea shop and the menu said — Sunny. Foggy. Dreamy. Potted. Hot or Cold.

And I just sat there for a second. 🤔

Not because I’d been doing it wrong. But because I didn’t know there were other ways.

I think about homeschool the same way. Most of us are doing it the only way we know how. The way we thought it was supposed to look. The way we saw someone else doing it. The way we researched it. The way we started.

And it’s not wrong.

But what if there’s a way that has less complexity? More margin? Less rigidity? More support?

What if there’s a way that’s just a little more breathable?

Sometimes the hardest part of the homeschool year is knowing how to close it.

By the time the end of May hits, it’s easy to move straight from unfinished lessons to summer planning to curriculum decisions to worrying about next year.

But before you start carrying a new school year…

Pause and close this one first.

Here’s what closing the year actually looks like:

1. Pick your last day.
Not “when every single thing is finished.”
Choose a stopping point.
Your family needs closure.

2. Decide what you are DONE with.
Some things need to be completed.
Some things don’t.
You are allowed to stop working on things that no longer need your energy.

3. Put the school year away on purpose.
Close the folders. File the papers. Stack the books. Throw away the piles.w
Physical closure helps your brain rest too.

4. Celebrate something before you assess anything.
You don’t have to wait until a milestone year to Before you open a new curriculum tab or write a single “what went wrong” note — look at what actually happened this year.
Your kid learned something. You showed up. That counts.

5. Let yourself rest before planning next year.
You do not need to immediately jump into fixing, researching, comparing, or preparing.

Finish this year first.

Then breathe.

Nobody showed up to my info meeting tonight. 😂

It’s Memorial Day. My husband knew. My son knew. I did not.

But here’s what I did instead — I sat at Sweetwaters, cut brunch flyers, sipped my coffee, and kept going.

Changing a mindset, working on a mission, and growing a movement is never easy. But if you believe in it — you show up anyway.

And listen — if YOU have been showing up all year for your kids, your family, and your homeschool even when it was hard — even when you felt like no one saw all the work you were doing behind the scenes — this brunch is for you.
