Mark Manioci joined the Padres in the 1998 season and made an immediate impact for the team not only on the mound but at the plate as well. Offensively, his spot near the top of the lineup provided consistent production each game.
At the time of his retirement, Manioci ranked in the top 3 in Padres history in multiple categories including At Bats, Runs, Hits, RBI, Stolen Bases, HBP, and Walks.
As effective as Manioci was with the bat, his pitching is what kept the Padres at the top of the league during his 27 year career. Even Tommy John surgery in 2009 couldn’t slow him down, as evidenced by the fact he pitched close to 600 innings more after surgery as he did before it.
Throughout his career, Manioci accumulated 1,858 strikeouts, pitched 24 complete game shutouts, and pitched an astounding 2,165 innings. His final record of 240-59 emphasizes both his dominance and longevity. He is far and away the all time team leader in every pitching category except Saves.
Manioci was just as important outside the lines as he was inside. In the dugout, he was essentially another coach. He motivated and encouraged his team, and also held his teammates accountable. His offseason routine was unmatched, and he showed up to every team practice usually just to throw batting practice for everyone else.
Manioci was voted team MVP 10 times and helped the Padres win 9 League Championships, and last Sunday his #16 jersey was officially retired in his honor.
The Rochester Padres value the history of the team and are proud to have such a mentor.
