I’m back with more on virtual play therapy!

I practice under directive and nondirective play therapy. While I consider myself a little bit more of a directive play therapist, I do do both!

Directive play therapy is when I have an activity that I want to complete with the child. This is typically geared towards their treatment goals or IEP. I often use my cards that I had when I was a school social worker in my sessions.

Nondirective play therapy is when I follow the child’s lead. I’ll engage with an online game of their choice or we play with their toys.

I find both approaches work for kids but sometimes it depends on the kid. Some don’t want to do “work” or associate my activities with academic work. Others don’t mind it as long as it’s fun and a game.

Stay tuned for more play therapy and virtual play therapy information!

Announcing an upcoming Parent Education Group!

I am excited to announce that I am opening a Parent Education Group that is beginning in September. This group is ideal for parents who have children with ADHD and/or Anxiety and experience external behaviors such as meltdowns, tantrums, or anger. You will learn techniques and interventions from DBT, CPRT, and more to help your child to process their emotions and reduce their external behaviors at home.

I am accepting insurance for this group and to register for this group, please contact the number or email below!

Note: this group is only for New York residents.

Bibliotherapy Sunday: “Alphabreaths” by Christopher Willard

I absolutely love this book and it’s one of my favorite mindfulness tools in my therapist toolbox.

“Alphabreaths” gives you 26 different mindfulness breathing activities paired with the letters of the alphabet. There are pictures and descriptions to help you!

This book is perfect for anyone teaching the alphabet, day cares, schools and more. Pair the letter from the book with the letter of the day, animal or movement of the day.

Everyone needs to add this book to their children’s book collection! You can find it on my Amazon Store here: https://amzn.to/3SPWPPR

Flashback Friday: Teaching Play Based Mindfulness Skills

Teaching children’s yoga is one of my favorite ways to teach play based mindfulness skills. Kids have no idea that that’s what they are learning, but you can see how learning the skills helps them.

Mindfulness with using yoga blocks is one of my favorites. It teaches mindfulness because kids have to focus on the present moment to keep the blocks on their heads (or another part of their body).

Turning a read aloud into a active yoga activity for kids…

This is one of my favorite ways to engage little ones from ages 2 and 3 all the way up to age 8!

For this activity, you will grab a book that has animals in them. Bonus points if there is a lesson behind it you want to teach, like being kind! Select one animal per page that you will hold a yoga pose like. Then you continue this pattern as you read the story.

This is such a great and easy way to engage kids in an active read aloud. You get in movement, a story, and even a lesson about a certain topic!

Let’s learn a play based Progressed Muscle Relaxation technique!

Today I am going to teach you a PMR technique that I teach many kids, called Making Lemonade. We pretend that we are squeezing lemons 🍋 to get the lemon juice out! The act of doing this causes kids to squeeze all the muscles in your arms as tight as you can.

Once you have squeezed out enough lemon juice (I do about 3 tight squeezes), you take a few deep breaths while stirring sugar into your lemonade.

And that’s it! A relaxation technique learned in a play based way!

Want your staff, teachers or parents to learn these techniques to use with their kids? DM me so we can set up a consultation!

Virtual play therapy… parents are often super hesitant about it. But I engage kids in virtual play therapy in so many ways.

One way I do that is through PowerPoint. This is a specific example of using PowerPoint to teach kids about the Mood Meter and the Volcano Meter. We move around the emotion pictures to where they belong on the Mood Meter or Volcano Meter. We have conversations about how some emotions may belong in between volcanoes because it may start towards one volcano or another based on the situation.

Using PowerPoint is one of my favorite interventions. I use it as an online replacement for arts and crafts or worksheets.

Be sure to continue to follow along to see how I use different tools for engagement in online play therapy sessions!

“When a Donut Goes to Therapy” by Erin Winters

Today’s bibliotherapy post is about a book that I love to ready with children when they start therapy. “When a Donut Goes to Therapy” walks kids through the process that therapy takes.

It shows the Donut building trust and engaging play therapy activities. It shows the Donut learning coping skills. It normalizes the scary feelings that could arise when talking about something difficult. And it shows the Donut graduating from therapy.

I highly recommend using this book in your play therapy space to introduce a little one to therapy. Or rereading it as they progress through the play therapy process!

Continue to follow along for more bibliotherapy books that help children with various topics!
