On Saturday, July 18, while Emergency Alerts buzzed Rochester phones, warning of torrential rains, flooding, and tornados, the sun shone on players in the two-day-old all-glass outdoor squash court at Sunrise Courts in Warsaw, NY (about an hour from Rochester).
Highlights of the day were inaugural play on the all-glass outdoor squash court (the first in western NY), the 716 Squash van full of energetic squash-playing kids from Buffalo, and the presence of world-class players Gina Kennedy (UK, WR #6) and Hannah Craig (Ireland, WR #60), who thrilled us with an exhibition match, and then hit with us. Gina and Hannah played collegiate squash on the nationally top-ranked Harvard women’s team.
Local players from Rochester and kids from 716 Squash were thrilled to play with Gina and Hannah, and with one another on the outdoor and indoor courts.
Fun was had by all. “When can we come back?” echoed as the event wound-down.
Sunrise Courts, is a court construction and renovation business operated by Jordan and Hannah Aldrich from Warsaw, NY, that has built and renovated squash courts across the U.S. for clubs (including Harro East and the Genesee Valley Club in Rochester), educational institutions, and private individuals. Examples of their squash court construction (sand-filled and paneled indoor walls and an outdoor court) are available for play in Warsaw.
Sunrise has a multi-sport facility known as Sunrise Community Courts adjoining the squash courts. There are three pickleball courts (2 outdoor and 1 indoor), sand volleyball, table tennis, and a golf simulator in addition to the squash courts. Sunrise plans to add another outdoor squash court adjoining the current one and with a roof covering both courts.
