Someone recently asked how many different burls are used in our knife handles. It’s a lot! And each cut is one-of-a-kind.

1 & 2 - Amboyna burl
3 - Cherry burl
4 - Buckeye burl set with blue resin
5 - Buckeye burl set with yellow resin
6 - Red oak burl
7 - Maple burl
8 - Elm burl, hybrid with green resin
9 - Dessert ironwood burl
10 - Red mallee burl
11 - Red mallee burl, hybrid with green resin

If you’ve visited our booth at Shaker Woods you’ve probably heard the story! We cut down a red oak burl on the Shaker Woods property and harvested it to make a special collection of knife handles.

One burl = an endless array of unique wood patterns.

Today’s the last day of the festival. Stop by (Sunday 8/23) before 5pm and check them out.

These knife handles start with pinecones collected right from yards in Ohio 🌲🔪

Once chosen, we carefully stabilized each pinecone so it won’t break down or become brittle over time. From there, it’s placed into a form and surrounded with colored acrylic resin.

Once the resin has fully cured, the pinecone is cut precisely down the center, or the heart, to create a mirrored image. Then sliced on the bandsaw to be the thickness needed for handles.

Each is then matched to a blade and shaped and sanded to a perfect fit.

Last image uses the petals of the pinecone, rather than the center, to make a scaled look.

Sourcing materials to create one-of-a-kind knives is what it’s all about!

Second weekend at Shaker Woods Festival in Columbiana, OH starts Saturday 8-15, 9AM-5PM and is open also on Sunday 8-16, 9AM-5PM. Praying for good weather again this weekend so customers can have an enjoyable time visiting the grounds. Hope to see you there!

Getting ready for my first Show of the 2026 season. Shaker Woods Festival in Columbiana, OH starts August 8-9 and runs for 3 weekends ending August 22-23 weekend. Hours are 9 AM - 5 PM each day. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Just finished a twisted damascus knife built with a crosscut and stabilized mammoth tusk. This will be available for sale soon when the sheath is finished.
