Would trying that movement with a friend or group of friends help you try that movement?

To end the Pilates class, Jolene had us go to the corner of the room, grab an eye pillow and a few body pillows. Everyone built themselves a little reformer cocoon and just shut our eyes. There was an amazing aroma of lavender, soft music and a beautiful quote that was written from our body’s perspective, read aloud. It was the perfect way to end a class that truly honored our bodies.

Danielle and Maria try Pilates on the reformer for the very first time with Jolene. This studio is located in Downtown Ripon right off W. Main St. Jolene makes this hard movement approachable for anyBODY from the second you walk in the door.

The class started with a quick foam roll session. Self led. If you don’t know how to foam roll properly, just ask Jolene! Then it started with a opening stretch. Big, long arms, outreaches to the sky. Cleansing breaths. The idea of feeling like your spine is lengthening by just standing tall with your shoulders pulled back and your posture, perfect! Then she tells you how to set the machine up. She will say, put on two red springs. Or one blue. (Or you can adjust anyway your body calls for) then she will tell you why to do with your body. And not in a way that’s confusing. Very simple cues that you will be able to recognize and do. In real time. We got on the reformer. We placed a ball behind the small of our back and we crunched. And we twisted. And then we crunched some more. We crunched so much that I thought for sure I had been in a fight with Mohammad Ali. Then we put on a back kick board and we bounced off of it. Legs in different positions. Think jump squats. But with WAY less impact, as we were on a sliding platform with springs as resistance. Then. It was over. For real. I have taken countless group classes and I have never not thought to myself “Sheeeze when is this s**t over?” But that was not the case with this class. It went fast and it was fun. And tbh. After doing all the things I do to get strong, and move my body, I honestly thought it would be cake. It wasn’t. I felt every single thing I did. I looked around and everyone else was fine. Meanwhile and I were sweating buckets and shaking like crazy. Lol. I can assure you though, the reformer is not as scary as it may seem. Everything is controllable and modifiable. Especially in the gentle, caring hands of the amazing Jolene! Go see her or anyone at ! You won’t regret it! .moves

For our first outing, we hit in Ripon, California. Jolene, the owner is a cheerful, lively red head that has a smile as big as her heart! You will usually find her rockin a tight bun, because according to her “A bun just screams POWER!” Studio joy has a quiet corner when you come in, that has a complimentary coffee/tea bar with a large selection. Cute cups that have her logo on them. Not a paper cup. I’m assuming because once there, you won’t want to take your drink to-go. You can sit and drink your coffee with a local magazine or take it outside on to their cute patio. She also has retail!!! Super cute, soft T-shirt’s, yoga pants, cute bags and socks (the kind with grippies on the bottom). Also a line of delightful smelly things that are made by her mother. Candles, bedroom spray, face wash and some lotions. All personalized for the studio. When you’re there, you immediately feel a part of their community. You’ll be invited to join their book club, if that’s what you’re in to. Or you can hit the Farmers market that she hosts on Thursdays all May and June. And. The best part. Behind the studio they’re starting work on a community garden that is ran by a local nonprofit that grows and donates fresh produce for the Second Harvest Food Bank of manteca. The New Client special is 3 classes for $39. THAT IS A STEAL for a Pilates class! When you go, please tell her that Danielle and Maria from sent you. .moves @ Studio Joy

Hi! I'm Maria ()! I am so PUMPED to be doing something like this with ! Growing up I've always wished there was something out there that showed REALISTIC examples of different bodies doing different fun/hard things in the fitness realm so OF COURSE I said yes when Danielle hit me up.
A little about me: I'm a single mom and freelance graphic and web designer living in Dublin, CA and I'm currently a competetive Powerlifter! Danielle and I are on the same team which is RAD () and so much fun. Before powerlifting, I was competing in Kettlebell Sport and had fun with that. I have a recurring knee injury and fibromyalgia so KS was a little too high impact and I ultimately "injured-out" as I called it. Before all of that, I played soccer recreationally as well as in high school and college as well as competitive adult leagues. I have always been bigger and experiences a lot of negative assumptions about my appearance. From regular people to fitness professionals/coaches. Because of that, I was terrified to go to any gym and would only just do my sports and that was it. I know NOW that I am naturally athletic and am pretty decent at most things, but it took a long time to get there. I'm still terrified of things like spin and pole and pilates (well, not anymore!) and barre and pretty much anything that the fitness industry has advertised all 33 years of my life as things only thin white women do. I know there is a shift in that sentiment recently and I CANNOT WAIT to try new things with my friend and break down barriers and just be extremely transparent during these experiences for you all. @ Dublin, California

Hi! I’m Danielle. A few years ago I had this thought, what if you had a TV show that followed you around to different fitness facilities and workouts, and it would highlight that type of movement. But that’s ridiculous because I’m just a personal trainer in Manteca California. I don’t know how to start a tv show. But I do know how to start a Instagram page! Ha! One of my main goals in my own fitness practice is to make workouts as far from intimidating as they can be. Because I know how scary it can be to show vulnerability in a gym or fitness environment. It’s hard to take that first step. So I wanted to take down one of the barriers between you and movement! I grabbed my friend (second pic) and said “Hey. Wanna do this thing with me?” And she was like “Yep!” I’ve never been the type of trainer/coach that thinks that my way is the best or only way. Through my journey navigating through a lupus diagnosis, I have done a ton of different forms of movement. (3rd pic!) I started running. From 5ks to an ultra marathon. Yoga, aerial, Pilates, hiking, stand up paddle boarding, and my most recent obsession, powerlifting. I just like moving my body. Hell. That was my businesses mantra! “Move your body”. If I could give someone looking for advice just getting into fitness/exercise/movement, would be to try everything, and when you find something that puts that fire in your belly, don’t stop until the fire goes out. Maybe it never will and maybe that’ll take you to the next thing! So that’s just it. My girl and I will visit some places where they’re doing hard things. Like Pilates reformer. Or strong man. Well take the class or do a lesson. And then we’ll tell you all about it! You’ll know what to expect before you even step in to a class! Well help you to get to know the owners as well! @ Manteca, California
