Summer wellness culture is relentless.

Get outside. Move your body. Glow up. Reset. Refresh. Transform.

And if you're navigating grief this summer โ€” that noise can feel like one more standard you're failing to meet.

You don't have to have a summer glow-up.

You don't have to reset. You don't have to get outside every day. You don't have to be grateful for the sunshine when the sunshine is hard to feel.

You just have to get through the day.

And today, getting through the day might look like:

More time together doesn't automatically mean more connection.

Summer is supposed to fix things, isn't it? More evenings. More time at home. More mornings that aren't rushed. The season of togetherness.

But more time together can also mean more time on the Quiet Floors.

More hours in the same house without knowing what to say. More mornings where you make coffee separately and eat breakfast in your own silence. More evenings where you're both tired and the conversation stays on the surface because going deeper feels too risky, too heavy, too much.

If that's your summer โ€” you're not alone in it.

The distance isn't a sign that your marriage is broken. It's a sign that grief has been doing the talking, and neither of you has had a translation guide.

The 10-Minute Check-in doesn't require a good moment or a perfect opening. It requires a timer and two questions:

"What was hard for you today?"

Nobody warns you that summer has its own grief ambushes.

The world tells you grief is for the dark months. The cold. The holidays when everyone is gathered and the empty chair is visible.

But summer has its own particular cruelty.
It's the due date that was supposed to be a summer baby โ€” and now it's just another hot day in July.

It's the beach trip where everyone packs their kids into the car and you're watching from a different kind of distance.

It's the family reunion with the cousin who's pregnant and glowing and you love her, you genuinely love her, and it still costs you something you didn't have to spare.

It's the pressure to be outside, to be present, to be enjoying it โ€” when the inside of you doesn't match the brightness of the season.

You are allowed to name that.

You are allowed to say: summer is hard too. In its own way. For its own reasons.
Shame dies when it's spoken in a safe place.

This is that place.

You made it through May.

That might sound small. It isn't.

May asked a lot of you โ€” Mother's Day, the anniversaries, the moments when grief ambushed you in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday. You stayed. You showed up. You kept putting one foot in front of the other even when that felt like the most impossible thing in the world.

June doesn't have to be the same.

June gets to be a little quieter. A little slower. A little less about surviving and a little more about settling into what you've been carrying.

Your grief and your life are not competing for the same space.

You've been told โ€” in a thousand subtle ways โ€” that you have to choose. That joy means forgetting. That re-engaging with your life means you didn't love what you lost enough.

That is not true.

You can return to your hobbies. You can have a good meeting. You can laugh at something, finish a project, enjoy a meal, feel excited about something small.

And you can do all of that while still carrying your loss. Not instead of it. Alongside it.

That's the L in W.H.O.L.D.: Living While Grieving. The permission to exist in your life โ€” fully โ€” without it being a betrayal of the baby you loved.

Joy is not a betrayal. It is a tribute.
