Most organisations are running 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, and that is why neither one finishes.
The first is about value. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗜? 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲? Why has the pilot not scaled? It usually sits with strategy, transformation or the business units.
The second is about risk. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗴𝗼 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴? 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝗳? What happens if it produces the wrong answer for a customer or a citizen? It usually sits with risk, security, compliance and legal.
They are treated as opposing forces. One side accelerates, the other applies the brake, and both believe they are protecting the organisation from the other.
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦.
You 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗜; you 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻. The initiative will stall at the first serious review, and no amount of executive enthusiasm survives a security sign-off; it cannot pass.
And you cannot justify 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲; nobody funds a control framework for a capability that has not yet proven it earns anything.
The organisations that get past this stop running the two conversations separately. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 become one initiative, with one owner, one record and one set of evidence.
That is harder than it sounds. It is also where most of the next three weeks of this series will go.
