This morning I ran a workshop for practitioners, health professionals, and coaches on Nervous System Regulation for Hypermobile Bodies.
We covered why standard nervous system tools often don’t bring the regulation you’d expect in EDS, POTS, and connective tissue disorders.
Connective tissue differences change the signal between the brain and the body. Joint position sense is measurably reduced in hypermobile joints, especially the lower limbs (Smith et al., 2013), and interoceptive signals, heartbeat, breath, gut, are altered too.
This is where grounding techniques and diaphragmatic breathing fall short. Both assume the brain already has an accurate readout of the body to ground into or breathe from.
Leading with a toolbox of techniques doesn’t work in many chronic conditions. What matters is the clinical reasoning behind why you choose an approach: understanding what state you’re shifting, and what the nervous system needs to trust before it can get there.
Give the nervous system consistent, accurate information first, so the brain has something reliable enough to revise its prediction from.
Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning!
