When your child gives you the one-word answer… don’t give up. 🤍
“Fine.”
“Okay.”
“Nothing.”
“I don’t know.”
It can be frustrating when you’re trying to connect and they seem completely uninterested in talking. But sometimes, our children need to know that the door is open before they’re ready to walk through it.
So instead of getting frustrated, try:
“Okay. I’m here if you want to talk.”
Keep asking the questions.
Keep checking in.
Keep showing interest in their world.
Keep creating opportunities for connection.
You don’t have to force the conversation.
Because when we respond with frustration, they may learn that opening up comes with pressure or consequences.
But when we respond with patience and consistency, they learn:
“My parent wants to hear me. I can talk to them. The door is always open.”
And sometimes, the conversation you’ve been waiting for comes when you least expect it — in the car, at bedtime, while making dinner, or when they suddenly walk into your room and start talking.
Don’t give up on the connection just because they aren’t ready to talk today.
Keep the door open.
They may walk through it when they need you most. 🖤
