Lady Cats Rally Past Pettus in Five-Set Thriller
REFUGIO — The Refugio Lady Cats showed plenty of fight Tuesday night, battling back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Pettus Lady Eagles in five sets, 25-20, 21-25, 24-26, 25-16, 15-9.
Refugio started strong, taking the opening set 25-20, but Pettus responded with a 25-21 win in the second set to even the match.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle that went beyond the traditional 25-point mark. Pettus ultimately prevailed 26-24, putting the Lady Cats on the brink of defeat.
Refugio answered emphatically in the fourth set.
The Lady Cats took control of the set and pulled away for a 25-16 victory, forcing a deciding fifth set. Refugio carried that momentum into the final frame, closing out the Eagles 15-9 to complete the comeback.
Offensively, Mya Mascorro led the Lady Cats with 17 kills, while Caylee Collins added 16 kills. Mascorro also contributed 12 assists, while Collins recorded 17 assists.
At the net, Refugio received a tremendous defensive effort from Ally Johnston, who finished with seven blocks. Cedie Wills added six blocks, while Cambry Cisneros, Collins and Mascorro each recorded one.
From the service line, Wills led the Lady Cats with five aces. Collins added three aces, while Aubrey Brown recorded two and Adriana Lara had one.
Defensively, Wills led Refugio with 28 digs, followed by Lara with 26 and Brown with 14. Cisneros recorded seven digs, while Mascorro had seven and Collins added six.
Mya Mascorro was recognized as the Town of Refugio/Refugio Sports Network Player of the Game for her performance in the victory. Mascorro finished the night with a team-high 17 kills, 12 assists, seven digs, one block and a strong all-around performance that helped the Lady Cats complete the five-set comeback.
The victory gives the Lady Cats an important early-season win and demonstrates their ability to battle through adversity after falling behind in the match.
