Resiliency.
It’s something we talk about a lot throughout the season. We talk about the importance of bouncing back and persevering through adversity; but every now and then we get to see it play out in real time. That’s what happened today.
In the 100 hurdles Aubrey clipped a hurdle and hit the ground hard. She was able to get up and finish. She finished 9th, her highest finish to that point, and for the first time became an all-state athlete.
As she fell she landed on her wrist. It started to swell. Painful to the touch. Bad news from the trainer; it’s a sprain. Good news? She can still run but it’s going to hurt. There was never a doubt that she would run, but we had to figure out how to execute it. She couldn’t put pressure on it so no blocks.
Warming up for the race, she fell over the first hurdle. Now we needed to try shake off the nerves and the emotions. As coaches we talked about it from a few angles and just gave her time to process. Time to report. As she entered the tent there was a lot of uncertainty. How will the lack of blocks impact her start? Will it impact her first hurdle? Mentally will she be able to attack the hurdles the same? This is where the resiliency came in. You can watch the video to find out the rest 😏
