It was a long but great day of wrestling Saturday in Purvis, MS. I want to thank MWF, MS USA Wrestling, DavidCoach Sutherland, and all the coaches, parents, and clubs that came to our old 1961 gym and filled it up! I want to thank my booster club, wrestlers, and parents for busting their tail all day to make sure the drinks were cold, food was hot, trash was empty, gym was as clean as it could be with standing room only and for rolling with the punches of online bracketing difficulties and a greater number of participants than expected. It was a long day, but the smiling faces and memories made on the mat reminded me why we all do this! People ask why in the world would you host this…. My question is if you say you love sports, kids, and making a difference…. Why would you not???? To go from not having a team to hosting a state wide tournament year one…. No way!
As far as PHS Wrestlers go… we had some familiar faces and some newbies make waves….
Parker Yawn-Newbie-10th grader 16UFolkstyle 175 lb 1st place

Peyton Armshaw-Newbie-9th grader 14U Freestyle 225 lb 1st place
14U Greco 225 lb 1st place
Did not do folk style… but probably should have…. 👑 seeker 2027… stay tuned!
Walker Hannaford-Returner-8th grader
16U Folkstyle 138 lb 3rd place
16U Freestyle 138 lb 3rd place
No Greco….
Fresh out of baseball in one of the toughest classes and our 8th grader keeps wrestling well beyond his years and earning respect from the best of the best. 2027 watchlist worthy!!!!
Landon Hensarling-Returner-7th grader
14U Folkstyle 120 lb 2nd place
14U Freestyle 120 lb 3rd place
No Greco
Our 25-26 most improved wrestler just keeps improving. He won his first ever metals and I’m glad to see it. He was on board from day one workouts and has put on several inches and 26 pounds of twisted steel and… you know the rest! Our lightweight just keeps getting better!!!
Bentlee Piggot-Newbie-8th Grader 14U Freestyle 115 lb 2nd place
14U Greco 115 lb 3rd place
No Folkstyle
This was Bentlees first tournament and it’s always good to get your feet wet and win a couple medals. He benefited from a couple forfeits, but he did what was needed on the mat to find success and it was awesome to see his confidence grow.
Nevaeh Simmons-Returner-11th grader
16U Freestyle 235 lb 2nd place
Injured during match so didn’t do Greco but she will be fine and still finished 2nd. Looking forward to see what the captain does her senior year after finishing 2nd at South state last year!
Tucker Mitchell-Newbie-7th Grader
14U Freestyle 155 lb 4th place
Trial by fire… Tucker drank from a fire hydrant Saturday as a new guy, but managed a top 4 finish! Looking forward to watching him develop skills and confidence!
And last but not least…. The smallest guy on the team….
Braxton Holmes-Newbie
10u Folkstyle 77 lb 1st place
Braxton just started a couple weeks ago and he already has his first medal. Thanks to returning wrestler and big brother, 8th grader Mason, our 157 pound wrestler, and friend Bob, our 215 pound wrestler …. Braxton was super prepared and used all the tips his big bro and buddy gave him to get his second win in two sports over a familiar foe! He may be the poster boy for the youth camp! And Mason and Bob may be the best coaches in the program! Tony and I are watching them close now… we feel the 🔥 heat 🔥!!!
If I left anyone out, please let me know. It was crazy busy and I want to make sure everyone gets their 💐.
Attaching a few pics… parents feel free to share if you have some I don’t! I did a terrible job taking pictures Saturday.
On to summer workouts starting June 2nd!!!!
