In yoga philosophy, the Koshas (meaning "sheaths" or "layers") are the five veils of consciousness that cover the true self.
My teacher once suggested visualizing or using a set of nesting dolls to really picture and understand the layersπ§πΌββοΈβ¨ and that helped me with this concept.
The five layers, moving from the outermost to the innermost, include:
1. Annamaya Kosha (The Physical Body)
What it is: The grossest layer, often called the "food sheath," made of flesh, bones, and organs.
How to access it: Through physical Asana (yoga postures) and a nourishing diet.
2. Pranamaya Kosha (The Energy/Breath Body)
What it is: The vital life-force energy (prana) that regulates biological functions like breathing, digestion, and circulation.
How to access it: Through Pranayama (breath control exercises) and mindful breathing.
3. Manomaya Kosha (The Mental/Emotional Body)
What it is: Your everyday thinking mind, conscious awareness, and fluctuating emotions.
How to access it: Through Pratyahara (sense withdrawal) and concentration techniques to keep the mind steady.
4. Vijnanamaya Kosha (The Wisdom/Intuitive Body)
What it is: Your higher intellect, conscience, discernment, and inner knowing.
How to access it: Through deep meditation (Dhyana) and the practice of ethical living (Yamas and Niyamas).
5. Anandamaya Kosha (The Bliss Body)
What it is: The innermost sheath representing a state of absolute peace, unbounded joy, and spiritual connection.
How to access it: Often experienced in profound states of meditation or spiritual surrender.
Understanding the koshas helps you realize that you are much more than just a physical body.
This understanding culminates with the realization of Atman, the core of your True Self, beyond all of the layers. The part of you that is infinite and eternal beyond all thought, time, and experience - the Divine Spark or Eternal Soul. The pure consciousness. The entire goal of practicing yoga is to experience the Atman within, and unite it with Brahman, the infinite Universal Consciousness that permeates the entire cosmos. The word Yoga means Union.
