Strength To Be Still

Strength To Be Still Strength to be Still offers virtual mental performance consulting. The name "Strength to be Still" came to me during my first yoga teacher training in 2010.

To me, it is what the ancient yogis were seeking when they invented asana, the physical practice of yoga. Since then, STBS has waxed and waned, transformed, died, and been reborn several times. In its latest form, my focus is on providing virtual mental performance consulting to a wide variety of populations, including youth, recreational, and elite athletes, musicians, dancers, exercisers, and more. Goal setting is probably one of the most used yet least understood techniques for changing behavior. Everyone sets goals at some point in their life, but unless you are intentional, systematic, and persistent about it, they are unlikely to effect any real change in your life. These slides offer a few tips to making your goal setting a little better than average. If you want to know more, schedule a free consultation with me today.

If you’re looking to get in shape, do yourself a favor and don’t follow “cookie cutter” training programs like these. Everyone starts in different places and has unique responses to training. There’s no such thing as a perfect workout. If you’re just starting out, two full-body workouts a week is plenty. Many people tend to overdo it at the start, get discouraged, then quit. Go slow and don’t underestimate the power of baby steps. Speaking of steps, walking just 30 minutes a day (or 10 minutes, 3x a day) can greatly improve your health. Anything above baseline, no matter how small, it’s worth doing. Just start!!

Yesterday was what has dubbed “Quitter’s Day”, the day when most people give up on their New Years Resolutions. This is likely because most people just throw out some fantastical end point they want to arrive at without creating a plan to get there. If you’ve already given up or are just hanging on by a thread, goal setting can help you develop a plan to stick with and achieve your goals. More posts on this topic coming soon! When I tell people what I do (mental performance consultant), most have no idea what that is. If they do, sport/athletes is always the first connection they make. Almost everyone though asks for an example of what I can do, and that can be a challenge.
The short answer is “optimize mental performance.” However, how I go about doing that is completely dependent on the current status of the group or individual I am working with. Certain skills are geared towards improving certain aspects of mental performance, but individual differences ultimately determine what is going to work best. That is what I love most about the job though. It is almost always interesting, exciting, and/or challenging.

At the time of this posting, I am a mere 4 hours away from completing my 400 hours of applied, mentored experience! Once I do, I then have to apply to take my lengthy, difficult certification exam. If it all works out, I should have CMPC status by the end of this year!
A minimum of 200 of those hours must be spent in direct contact with clients (individuals or groups). A maximum of 150 hours come from “support activities” (observing practice, preparing for sessions, etc.). The remaining 50 hours are spent in mentorship activities. Additionally, at least half of the 400 hours (direct +support +mentoring) must be spent with competitive sport populations.
I have spent a majority of my hours working with a highly competitive, youth gymnastics team. I have also worked with D1 track and field athletes, doctoral conducting students, and weight loss program participants. If you are interested in learning more about what I do, schedule your free consultation today via the link in my bio.
