She doesn’t know it yet, but one day she’ll look back and realize this was never just softball. It was never really about the score, the rings, the wins, or even the losses. It was about becoming. Becoming stronger after striking out. Learning how to keep going after disappointment. Finding confidence in moments that once felt too big. Learning discipline, resilience, teamwork, heartbreak, and how to stand back up when life humbles you.

Right now, it’s dirt-stained pants, packed coolers, long tournament weekends, tired eyes, gas station snacks, forgotten hair ties, and chasing sunsets from one ball field to the next. It’s the chaos we swear we’re exhausted from… while secretly wishing time would slow down.

Because somewhere between the early mornings, the late nights, the smell of sunscreen and red dirt, the loud cheers from the stands, and the silent prayers whispered before big moments… our little girls are growing up.

One day the cleats will be left by the door for the last time. The jerseys will stop piling up in the laundry. There won’t be another game circled on the calendar. And the thing that once felt so loud and consuming will suddenly become quiet. Just memories tucked inside photos that somehow never captured how special it all really was.

But I hope she remembers this: that she was brave, capable, strong, and deeply loved every step of the way. That someone was always in the stands cheering the loudest for her — not because of the athlete she was becoming, but because of the person she already is.

Because one day, she’ll realize… this was never just softball. This was childhood. This was growth. This was family. This was chasing dreams. And for us moms and dads… this was getting a front-row seat to watch our babies slowly become who they were always meant to be.

This evening at 6pm, I will be attending the final high school softball awards banquet, bringing an end to my high school career. As a Lady Hornet, the time I spent playing softball was filled with memorable moments. Photos of the event will be shared by my mother, either later tonight or tomorrow. I look forward to potentially receiving an award.

I felt thrilled that 2 of my regular students made an appearance at my graduation.
