Parents, what are we doing?
We drive across town, haul folding chairs, pack enough snacks for a minor emergency, pay the registration fees, and give up our Saturday morning.
Then we spend the entire game watching our child through a six-inch screen.
Are we really going back to watch 45 minutes of shaky youth soccer footage?
Be honest. Most of it will live untouched in the camera roll between a screenshot of a confirmation number and a picture of where we parked.
I understand recording the first goal, the game-winner, or a special moment to send the grandparents. I record things too.
But there is a difference between saving a moment and missing the entire game while trying to save every second of it.
Watch your kid play.
Notice how they respond after making a mistake. Watch them encourage a teammate, hustle when nobody is cheering, and look toward the sideline after doing something they are proud of.
They are not looking over to see whether you kept them centered in the frame.
They are looking to see whether you saw it.
Someday, our camera rolls may contain thousands of clips from seasons we would give anything to stand beside again.
Record a little.
Watch a lot.
You can replay the video.
You cannot replay the Saturday.
