Sports have always required athletes to be vulnerable but today it’s gotten to another level. Already vulnerable to failure, losing, injury, disappointing others, coming up short, criticism, getting your butt kicked in front of a crowd... but today’s youth sports?
I am appalled by how toxic the culture has gotten and how vulnerable kids become to hate, criticism, and demeaning words online and in person.
I am in the Facebook groups, I see the comments, I coached a 10u team and heard what was said the in the stands, I see the bullies who belittle and hide behind the title of “coach”. There are a lot of pathetic adults out there criticizing kids who are working insanely hard going after their dreams, young women who have more courage on any given Saturday than many grown folks will ever show.
In high school I made the mistake of reading message boards about my teams state championship performances. I thought it would make me mad, motivated, and put a chip on my shoulder. Instead those voices just reverberated in my head for the rest of my career. I chose to listen to the wrong people.
Choose to listen to those who are who you want to be. Listen only to the voices of people who genuinely care about you and those who have done more than you. You can’t control what people choose to say. But you can control whose voices you tune into. I know every woman in this photo has had people throw rocks at them. Let their words fall to the ground. Do not pick them up and carry them around.
You are the woman in the arena and there are a lot of cheap seats. Choose to play the game, have the courage to be vulnerable. You are destined for more - do not let youth sports culture take your love of the game. Keep showing up and please pray for these poor haters 🙏🏼
