DO YOU ENJOY YOUR WORKOUTS? A GUEST POST FROM OUR TEAM MEMBER, SEAN.
I have a confession, for most of my life I hated exercise, and when I finally decided to get my body in shape my workouts were mostly a way to offset the effects of alcohol and garbage food that I was eating on the weekends. Only a few years ago, working out 5 days a week, and running 2 or 3 times a week would have been unimaginable to me.
Changing my mind-set did not happen over night, it took one small adjustment at a time to my daily routine before I really started to enjoy my workouts (and to be honest, sometimes I'm still not thrilled to hit the gym.)
1. I tried different workouts - Instead of just lifting weights and using the machines at the gym, I started researching HIIT workouts, TRX suspension training, and dynamic stretching, this allowed me to find my strengths and weaknesses, and not get bored easily.
2. I started working out first thing in the morning - Like most people I work 9-5, and have a few side projects I work on in the evening, and making sure I have time for friends and family is extremely important to me. The only logical way to make more time for my workouts was to wake my ass up earlier and get going.
3. I stopped counting my calories - when I first starting working out it was all about how many calories am I taking in, and how many calories are going out, AND IN NO WAY AM I SAYING YOU SHOULD STOP. But for me personally the time spent was not worth it, I'm not a professional athlete, I have not struggled with my weight, researching good nutrition and exercise felt like a better use of my time.
4. I invested in home workout equipment - There are some days I just don't want to leave the house, especially working out early in the morning, purchasing a few sets of dumbbells, a yoga mat, TRX bands, and an ab roller was all I needed to get started working out in my basement.
Over the course of a year or two these small changes helped me develop a positive relationship with exercise, instead of seeing it as a necessary evil.
