The Pro Football Alumni / Huddle Up for Kids Foundation "event season" is all ready to go with the "kick off" event being the Shell / Pro Football Alumni Community Awards Gala, this year with the most decorated running back in the history of collegiate and NFL football, Tony Dorsett. The date is June 25, 2022, at the beautiful Shadow Lakes golf club in Aliquippa, PA.

Tony grew up in Aliquippa, PA and attended Hopewell High School before starring on the national championship Pitt Panthers football team and winning the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, the Walter Camp Award and many other player of the year awards. Dorsett was a four-time All-American at Pitt, including his freshman year when he was the first college player in the nation since WW2 to be a first-team All-American as a freshman. He continued his record setting career as a member of the Dallas Cowboys, and became the first player to ever win a national championship his last collegiate season and then a Super Bowl in his first NFL season when Dorsett was NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. In his storied NFL career, Dorsett went on to rush for 12,739 yards, trailing at the time only Walter Payton for career yards, retiring due to injury. Tony is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Tony Dorsett's Dallas Cowboy teammate and close friend, Tony Hill, will be introducing Tony Dorsett, and former Steeler feature back and longtime ESPN analyst Merril Hoge will emcee the event. The event is Chaired by my charity partner, former Steeler and long time Vikings right guard, Todd Kalis, and the Hon. Chair is Hilary Mercer, who leads Shell Polymers in Beaver County, PA.

In 2019 our Shell event netted $237,000 for charity, mostly directed to benefit Beaver County. If you have any interest in joining the incredible fun of this event, supporting the re-emergence of Beaver County, or networking at levels rarely seen, please reach out to Charlie Schliebs or Todd Kalis directly.

Congratulations to Troy Polamalu on his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame! On April 26, 2003, right after Troy was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round, I was provided an opportunity to interview him by phone while co-hosting a special draft episode of the Steelers Huddle, a live cable television show. He had a very calm, soft spoken composure as we talked about his future goals with the Steelers. His performance on the field was very much the opposite, he quickly became known as one of the fastest, (4.34, 40-yard dash) and hardest hitting Steelers in team history. His flying Superman sacks and tackles were so much fun to watch during his 12-year career with the Black and Gold. Little did I know that 17 years later he would become a Hall of Famer in his first year of eligibility.
Thank you for all the great memories!

Congratulations to Mike Ditka for being named a First-Team selection on ESPN’s All-Time, All-America college football team.

Even though he is one of the greatest players in American football history, a 1st round draft pick, Super Bowl Champion both as a player and coach, a member of both the College and Pro Football HOF, NFL Rookie of the Year, (1961), Coach of the Year, (85&88), and so on, he was kind enough to accept my invitation to attend our first annual Shell/Pro Football Alumni Community Awards Gala on 6/23/18 to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mike’s acceptance speech was tremendous, it provided everyone a glimpse of what it must have been like to hear him speak to his team in the locker room during his days as an NFL head coach. The Gala is an annual fundraiser supporting local nonprofit organizations in Mike’s hometown community of Beaver County, Pennsylvania.

After spending 6 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings I (Todd Kalis) had the privilege of playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Coach Bill Cowher. It was 1994, Bill’s 3rd year as head coach, we finished the regular season 12-4, (a top ten Steelers season record), won twice on Monday Night, defeating both the Oilers and Bills and established a new defensive nickname . I am so happy for both you and your family, being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is the highest honor an American football player/coach can receive. His commitment to relentless preparation was the foundation of our success. It also sparked a desire in every player to deliver nothing less than 110% effort on every play. Generations for years to come will now be able to travel to Canton to learn about all the great moments that were generated by his teams. Thank you for all the great memories I’ll be able to share with my friends and family for years to come!

When the Pittsburgh Steelers were at the apex of their 1970s glory, when they were the mightiest assemblage of football talent in the history of the game, they were held together by Davis, the one they called Tight Man, the nickname given him for his role in keeping the team close. Tight Man befriended rookies, teased fellow veterans and flashed that smile.

Sam Davis once was the glue that held the super Steelers together. But a promising career after football was cut short by an unexplained fall that robbed him of the life he knew.

Net proceeds from the 2018 Sporting Clays Charity Classic allowed us to donate a record-breaking $40,000 to The Woodlands Foundation in support of their mission to enrich the lives of children and adults with disability and chronic illness.

The Woodlands is a nonprofit human service organization dedicated to serving children and adults with disability and chronic illness. Our work is designed to strengthen and support individuals and groups in five main areas: socialization, recreation, environment, culture and spirituality. Activities are held year-round at the beautiful, 52-acre, fully accessible campus in Wexford, Pennsylvania.
