30 Days of Yoga - Day 9:
"This is your practice, make it work for you" This is the sentiment I always like to infuse into all of my classes.
-
I say this to remind students that they do not have to try to perform postures that don't make sense in their bodies.
-
I say it so that they don't feel like they have to seek permission from me to deviate from my instruction.
-
I say it so they can feel free to be exactly who they are, as they are.
-
I say it because there are so many other space in the world where we are expected to fit in and conform; our yoga practice should not be one of them.
-
I say it so that they feel welcomed and understood.
-
I want my students to know that I care for them, that I'm interested in how they experience the world and I want them to know that I am not hell-bent on trying to force them to experience the world, the way that I do or the way that anyone else does either for that matter.
-
It's important to recognise our differences physically AND BEYOND. All bodies are different and all souls have different life experiences. It's important to make space for the different ways that we individually experience the world.
-
When something comes easy for you, don't take it for granted and assume that it comes easy for all. Suspend judgement, be curious, allow yourself to view the world with an open mind.
-
Sometimes when we are in class and thinking "all class long the person next to me has been so lazy, they have not put any effort towards the majority of the postures" the reason may be because they are nursing a pulled hamstring injury or because of low back pain. Reasons that we have no idea of, and frankly are none of our business as yoga is truly the practice of gaining a deeper understanding of one's self.
-
No matter our differences; be they physical abilities in yoga, religious background, race, ethnicity, gender or any other differentiating factors, allowing another to have their own experience of the world is something we must create space for. All souls have a right to be and none are more valuable than another. Not feeling threatened by the importance of another it is paramount... sharing the spotlight, spreading the wealth, giving credence to another person's beliefs, listening to another's point of view, permitting someone to do a different variation of a pose in yoga class... These are examples of the ability to let another "be" - which is an understanding and of true love.
