30 Days of Yoga - Day 9:
"This is your practice, make it work for you" This is the sentiment I always like to infuse into all of my classes.
-
I say this to remind students that they do not have to try to perform postures that don't make sense in their bodies.
-
I say it so that they don't feel like they have to seek permission from me to deviate from my instruction.
-
I say it so they can feel free to be exactly who they are, as they are.
-
I say it because there are so many other space in the world where we are expected to fit in and conform; our yoga practice should not be one of them.
-
I say it so that they feel welcomed and understood.
-
I want my students to know that I care for them, that I'm interested in how they experience the world and I want them to know that I am not hell-bent on trying to force them to experience the world, the way that I do or the way that anyone else does either for that matter.
-
It's important to recognise our differences physically AND BEYOND. All bodies are different and all souls have different life experiences. It's important to make space for the different ways that we individually experience the world.
-
When something comes easy for you, don't take it for granted and assume that it comes easy for all. Suspend judgement, be curious, allow yourself to view the world with an open mind.
-
Sometimes when we are in class and thinking "all class long the person next to me has been so lazy, they have not put any effort towards the majority of the postures" the reason may be because they are nursing a pulled hamstring injury or because of low back pain. Reasons that we have no idea of, and frankly are none of our business as yoga is truly the practice of gaining a deeper understanding of one's self.
-
No matter our differences; be they physical abilities in yoga, religious background, race, ethnicity, gender or any other differentiating factors, allowing another to have their own experience of the world is something we must create space for. All souls have a right to be and none are more valuable than another. Not feeling threatened by the importance of another it is paramount... sharing the spotlight, spreading the wealth, giving credence to another person's beliefs, listening to another's point of view, permitting someone to do a different variation of a pose in yoga class... These are examples of the ability to let another "be" - which is an understanding and of true love.

30 Days of Yoga - Day 6:
The Sanskrit root yuj means to “yoke,” “bind,” or “join together.” It also indicates “union” or “Oneness.”
-
The yoking of our physical, mental and spiritual energy is the way that is most commonly understood through yoga. Having to still the mind, and focus all of your conscious
awareness & breath in order to arrange your body in a specific asana pulls together you entire being. In many challenging postures, this is the only way you can achieve them through discipline and precise focus of all of your faculties.
-
The lesser recognized way that yoga joins us together and creates unity & oneness is through the way yoga connects us with each other. In practice of the yogic, eight limb path we are taught the Yamas; social ethics for the outer world & the Niyamas; observances for self discipline. Its through these codes of conduct that we honor both the self and the other. Kind of like the proverb "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." The compassion and non judgement we attune to during our asana practice is granted to our own being as we develop the patience to be at peace with where we are at any stage of development in the evolution of learning a posture. Once this kindness to self is integrated within our treatment to the self, an automatic transfer of this behavior towards others occurs. Compassion is full acceptance of others as we would fully accept ourself. Full acceptance of another as you would accept yourself is ONENESS.
-
At the deepest spiritual level, yoga allows us to reveal the Self, the True Essence of our Being. Ultimately, it is the means by which we realize that there is no separation between anyone or anything. Everything is One.

30 Days of Yoga - Day 3:

As a yoga instructor, I hear students and potential students say all the time "I can't do yoga, I'm not that flexible," and to that I respond:
-
"It's not about being good at something, it's about being good to yourself"
-
Many are impressed by the advanced balancing acts and the contortionist poses yoga is famous for however yoga can be as challenging or as simple as you like.
-
The thing I find most important about yoga is the daily discipline to be good to YOU! Our bodies need to be exercised and the ASANAS or postures of yoga help us to move energy through the body and release energetic and emotional toxins! Not to mention, it gives us the opportunity to get to know ourselves more deeply on a physical level.

30 Days of Yoga - Day 2:
Yesterday we paused in honor of the BLACKOUT supporting the BLM movement, in solidarity for the just treatment, the humanity and the civil rights of BLACK CITIZENS.
-
This campaign is in alignment with those values... Black is beautiful and it is our goal to highlight just how beautiful, strong, graceful, peaceful, empowered, defiant, humble we as black people, and as humans, we are... It's the goal of this "30 Days of Yoga" campaign to celebrate all of our humanity AND all of our bodies... It's our goal to inspire & connect you to the same amazing qualities within you, that you will see displayed in the humans portrayed in these immages.
-
On this, Day 2 we remember that: Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.
-
